College Board Election Statements March 2009 -Students
Dehal, Rajbinder
My name is Raj and I am running to become a Student Representative on the Douglas College Board. I am currently a second-year student in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. As a nursing student I have experienced our faculty preach and demonstrate the power of advocacy and empowerment. We all received the email asking for students to campaign and run for positions on the Board; I was surprised when there was a second call due to the limited number of nominations and realized that this in itself is a reason to demand change. Empowerment of the student body is crucial because we have the ability to take on significant roles to promote change and it is unfortunate that we are hesitant to jump on such opportunities. On the Board, I can share my experiences with all of you and hope that other students will feel empowered to become active members of our college community. Also, I want to increase awareness of how much power lies within each of us. By learning how to harness this power now, we will be Douglas College graduates with the ability and experience necessary to excel and revolutionize practices in each one of our areas of expertise. I want to be an advocate for all of you to feel that your voice is heard and represented before a committee that makes influential decisions affecting our future. I ask that you support me in my campaign to represent students on the Douglas College Board.
Lenahan, Geoff
I am in my 6th year as a student at Douglas College. The first four I worked towards an Associates of Science, finishing up to my second year courses in biology and chemistry. Last year I decided to change my educational goal and enrolled in the Business Diploma program.
Over the last two years I have been heavily involved in the Douglas Students' Union as Internal Relations Coordinator and as Treasurer, working tirelessly to get the DSU out of receivership and back on its feet.
Over those two years I worked closely with the Douglas College Board to resolve all issues between the DSU and the school, and am proud of the working relationship that has now developed between the two groups. In these dealings I developed a positive rapport with several current Board members, and as such, would have an easy time jumping into the position.
I know I would represent the students of Douglas College the way they deserve, with a strong voice, willing to work towards productive change and growth of the Board and the institution. My experiences with the Board and the Finance Committee have given me invaluable insight to the workings of the school, and I would love the opportunity to use those experiences as a Board member.
I appreciate this opportunity to represent the students of Douglas College, and thank you for your consideration of me, Geoff Lenahan, for College Board.
Liu, Harold
I feel quite privileged to run for the College Board and Education Council. With innovative ideas, thoughtful decision-making, and a passion for volunteerism, I will make your voice heard and choice counted no matter what your background and beliefs may be.
Also, I am dedicated and committed to serving people for the common good, and with my past volunteer experience, for which I won awards both at secondary school and outside, I can help Douglas College continue to deliver a quality education and experience to all students and faculties.
For the sake of improving the college and enriching our learning experience, I will propose ways for better and more effective communication and interaction between the administration and the general student body, thus improving the administration's visibility amongst the student body. Moreover, I will put my vision into reality, enabling us, the students, to better engage in our diverse and dynamic pursuits.
Last but not least, my passion does not end with the campaign and I will continue to work hard to serve with maturity and professionalism, and address and achieve our concerns and goals.
I strongly believe that the statements above qualify me as a candidate for the positions and I ask for your support.
For progress and a better future for the college, please vote for me, Harold. If you have any question regarding my perspective for how the school should run, email me at mrhaomiaoliu@hotmail.com.
Thank you for your support.
Milot, Jason
My name is Jason Milot, and I write to you to introduce myself and announce my candidacy as the student representative for the College Board at Douglas College. I am an older student with years of professional experience in management and also as a business owner. As a result, I have gained the knowledge and skills such as critical analysis, complex problem solving, and negotiation that will be of great benefit to this position and subsequently to you. I am also a parent with a keen understanding of how important a nurturing environment is to learning.
If elected, I will commit to providing the valuable insight that embodies the interests and vision of the student body. Be assured that I wish to serve you all with the purest of intentions to create a positive learning environment.
I hope to be a catalyst that shapes your student life for the better. And so, if you care for your education, if you understand the importance it has on our future, if you believe in the ideals of education and the opportunities it can provide for you and for others, then I ask you for your vote next week. Let me be your representative on the College Board so that I may continue to pave the way for a bright future at Douglas College. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you!
Regan, Michael
I have a profound interest in representing the student body on the Douglas College Board. I have been attending Douglas College since 2001 and am completing my BA in Child and Youth Care. I have a very diverse portfolio of courses including Business, English, Psychology and CFCS core programs. I coach sports in my spare time and support the arts community in Vancouver when time permits. I have a connection with all of disciplines offered at Douglas College and the students who participate in them. Furthermore, I represented the students of the CFCS programs when finishing my diploma in CYCC. I have experience as a student representative and am also well connected with the student experience at Douglas due to my length of time as a student. I am looking forward to representing the student body should I be elected to the position and I am fully committed to accurately representing the full range of issues put forth by all students.
