My dream job

is to work with young adults with co-occurring disorders, meaning they are struggling with both addiction and mental health issues. Eventually I would love to open my own private practice, where I would provide counselling through personalized leisure and recreation interventions.

Meant to be

I have always known that I would have a career that would fulfill my passion of helping people. After a couple of years of schooling in other fields, I stumbled across the Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Program online. I was overcome with excitement at the possibility of helping people change their lives through meaningful leisure and recreation

Degrees of success

I am a natural-born leader with big dreams for the future of TR. With a degree in this field, the opportunities are endless. It was important to me professionally to have the credentials beside my name that would afford me the chance to make a real difference.

Just a letter

The hardest thing about college has been realizing that I don't have to get perfect grades. The letter grade is simply an opinion about the work I have done. I have strived to do the absolute best I can do, to get the most out of the assignments and lectures and to really find personal meaning in all that I am required to do and to me, that is perfection!

A-ha!

The best thing about college is the thrill of learning something new - the "A-ha" moments that give you goose bumps and remind you about the reasons you are sitting in class.

Picking favourites

If I had to pick one instructor, it would be Lee Chamberland. Lee instilled a vision in me of what TR could be my first semester of the program. She helped me to step out of the box, take risks and realize the power of leisure and recreation in my own life. Her passion, energy and genuine love of the profession always made me look forward to her class.

Nothing is what it seems

In the classroom, you learn about different populations of people, different theories, and a variety of program delivery techniques. When you get into the real world, all of that knowledge acts as a good foundation but it comes together in a very different way than what the textbook tells you.
