To get ready for college courses
I'd recommend taking a Development Studies (DVST) course. It really prepares you to take regular academic courses at Douglas. I took DVST 0455 - advanced reading and writing. The way Brenda Braiden taught the class - the grammar, citation styles, how to write an academic paper - was so useful. I learned everything in that class that I needed for the rest of my studies at Douglas.

My favourite class was
Introduction to Women's Studies. There were two guys in the class and one of them kind of took it upon himself to "protect" the male point of view. We had great debates and it was so much fun. Karen Cowan was the instructor and she encouraged very interesting discussions. That relationship with the instructors at Douglas is so important. It's a small community and everyone is so supportive.

The most fun I had at Douglas
was being a Student Ambassador. I worked with many different people and connected to new students - it was amazing. But the one thing that I remember the most about being an Ambassador was learning how to make popcorn! I remember watching them make popcorn in the concourse during Welcome Week and thinking "how do they do that?" and then I got to do it and I learned! It wasn't hard.

The hardest thing about coming to college was
being new to Canada and to the language. I'm from Iran and had only been here for two years before coming to Douglas. I wasn't familiar with post-secondary education in Canada and was speaking a new language, so I was scared and nervous! But by the time we got to mid-terms I was very happy. I knew that this was the right place for me. Some of my best friends are from Douglas College and I even became friends with some of my instructors.
