Career options now unlimited

Julia Collin says the fact that she can finish her Post-degree Diploma in Marketing in one year was a big attraction to the program.
Even though Julia Collin has a degree in the Arts, it took studying marketing at Douglas to get "an opportunity to use my creativity."
Collin came to Douglas, degree in Ancient and Medieval History in hand, to pursue a Post-degree Diploma in Marketing.
"My focus was so narrow before. Now that I'm here, I can see how much I enjoy advertising. I'd like to start at an ad agency and work my way up. I don't want to limit my career path. Ideally, I'd like to end up in a museum doing marketing," she says.
Originally, Collin planned on continuing on to a master's and PhD with the goal of becoming a professor or museum curator. However, she got a taste of marketing through sales jobs she did while a student, so started to consider a change.
"I didn't want to do another four years of school, but wanted to complement my degree so I'm confident going into job interviews," says Collin. When she found the Post-degree Diploma in Marketing Program at Douglas, she was sold.
"It was the perfect choice. The program is one year long, so I can get what I want and get into the workforce faster," she explains.
Collin has since discovered other benefits to coming to Douglas. "The people are very welcoming. After my interview with Gail (Tibbo, Marketing Chair), she introduced me to someone from the Douglas College Business Association. Along with the smaller class sizes, you get to know everyone in Marketing. It's a nice community."
However, she warns students who think they're going to be in for an easy ride after doing a degree to think again. "The workload is extremely challenging, so students should be prepared to dedicate themselves to it," says Collin.
The Post-degree Diploma in Marketing Program, which was introduced in September, 2009, is geared towards students who, like Collin, have a degree in a field other than marketing. The curriculum is intensive, giving students hands-on experience and exposure to the technical, creative and management aspects of marketing.
