is ready to take the next step.

Education:

Associate of Arts, English, 2009
BA English at UBC (starting Winter 2010)

Kudos:

  • recipient of both Sylvia Perry and Ken McClinchey scholarships
  • recipient of International Studies Award to attend Wales Field School

Career goals:

After completing my degree, I am planning to pursue a career in law or possibly journalism.

Favourite novels:

I read a lot, so this is a hard question! If I had to choose though, The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb, and Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger are some of my favorites.

The right start

Although I had been accepted by some universities, I did not feel ready to leave home after high school. Douglas seemed like a smart choice because it was close to home and provided a place to try out different courses without paying university prices.

The local setting

After having a positive experience in my first year at Douglas, I was not anxious to transfer to university for my second year. The Associate of Arts Degree seemed like a good option as it allowed me to complete my first two years in the supportive college environment before entering into a third-year university program.

And a Wales-style finish

The Wales study abroad program allowed me to view real-life examples of the subjects I was learning about in class. Being able to see geographical features, cultural practices and artistic performances enhanced my learning experience in all three of the classes included in the program. At first, I was on the fence about taking the opportunity, but it was an amazing experience that was entirely worth it. It gave me the chance to travel, gain independence, become introduced to a new culture and study with supportive Douglas instructors.

Speaking of instructors

I have had so many great instructors throughout my time at Douglas. Elizabeth McCausland is one who stands out because she went above and beyond in providing support in and out of class time. Peter Wilkins, Karen Cowan, and Trish Matson are also amazing instructors as they were entertaining and inspiring.

Prepared for the next step

The Associate of Arts Degree has given me a taste for a variety of different courses and familiarized me with the liberal education I will be continuing to receive at UBC. Also, it has allowed me to become more apt at critical thinking and has made me confident in my ability to write thoughtful and organized papers. I think these skills will be extremely beneficial in my further studies.

Good times overall

The supportive environment of the college was definitely one of the best parts of my experience at Douglas. The teachers, librarians, and student advisers were always happy to provide answers to my questions and concerns.
