Veterinary Office and Animal Care

Sharon Jamieson

is fond of dog breeds that start with 'B'.

Education:

Veterinary Office and Animal Care, 2007

Currently:

Veterinary Assistant, Como Lake Veterinary Hospital, Coquitlam

My pet:

Rooney, a 9-month-old Boxer that belongs to my son who still lives at home. He is full of energy ' I've nicknamed him Looney ' and lots of fun.

My role model:

My dad as he is always positive, energetic and has surprised me because he is always trying new things.  He also has an excellent work ethic so is always busy.

My first pet

A Beagle I named Bacchus. I had him for 16 years though he stayed at my parents' house after I left home. However, he was still my dog and knew the sound of my car when I came to visit, so if he was out for a walk when I came to visit he would drag whoever was walking him home.

Before Douglas

I was a stay-at-home mom for 20 years and prior to that, I was a chemist in a geochemical assaying lab.

The best of times

Meeting new people with similar interests, although they were a lot younger. Learning new skills and working with the animals. My favorite days were the ones spent in a hospital with hands-on experiences.

The challenging times

Going back to school after 30 years and learning computer skills, especially since everyone else already had the skills

The Douglas advantage

The program is taught by veterinarians and veterinary technicians and the majority of it is focused on animal care. Only one day a week was office and computer skills.

The hard sell

Douglas has knowledgeable, professional instructors who care about their subject. They cover a broad spectrum of topics and prepare you well for the practicum, interviews and future employment. This is a six-month course that prepares you for employment.

On-the-job learning

Animals are strong, good at hiding their pain and recover very quickly from surgeries that would keep us in bed for weeks. Teamwork between colleagues is an important part of veterinary care.
