Currently:

I am working part-time as a behavioral interventionist with children who have autism spectrum disorder. I am also working on an on-call basis as a special education assistant in the schools in my local district.

Career goals:

To help promote inclusion for people who have disabilities, and their families, to become active members of their community.

My role model is:

My sister, who has special needs, and is the reason why I entered this field.

Keeps me coming back:

Douglas College is one of the leading colleges to have courses on autism, and how to support people with autism. They are also one of the few post secondary institutions that offers specialized and accredited courses in Applied Behaviour Analysis.

The perks

It is a small learning environment and teachers really care about the success of all their students. The teachers are approachable and willing to help.

The challenge

Trying to finish papers, projects and readings while working and trying to have some sort of a life.

Lasting in-class lessons

I have learned many different teaching techniques and approaches that will help not only those with disabilities, but will benefit all the students and individuals I work with.

On-the-job lessons

I have learned to stay calm, go with the flow, and use the knowledge that I have gained from my teachers, fellow students and practicums.
