Career goals:
After working in the computer industry for a few years, I actually hope to return to school to do an education degree - for years now I’ve wanted to teach computers to children of elementary school age. I have always loved working with children; I find their innocence and youthful points of view so refreshing.
Personal goals:
After successfully graduating this Summer, I will begin the process needed to get my post-grad work permit, apply for permanent residency and eventually citizenship – I am looking forward to becoming a Canadian citizen in the near future.
Role models:
My love for computers and technology stems from my Dad, who always seemed to know everything, and always had the coolest and most unique - if not the latest for the times - gadgets and devices around the house while I was growing up. I would have to attribute my hard-working and customer-oriented attitude to my Mom. I’ve always seen her strong-willed work ethic as something to aspire to.
Being 'taught to'
Computers are my passion, and it only made sense to study about them more in depth so that I can work in the industry. I chose Douglas College primarily because I prefer the smaller class sizes versus the large, impersonal auditorium-style of learning. The difference for me is being “taught to” and not “taught at.”
Getting hands on
My Co-op experience was fantastic! I worked in the Help Desk at the Corporate Head Office of Sierra Systems Group Inc., an IT management and consulting company. I find I have a better understanding for what I’m taught now since I can think back to how it would have applied in the workplace.
Better job opps
I definitely feel that with the experience I gained working at my Co-op placement, and the positive reference I earned from a reputable company to add to my resume, my future job opportunities have increased tenfold.
The ultimate de-stressor
Being involved in intramurals is probably one of the best decisions I’ve made during my time here at Douglas! It truly is a great way to unwind after a full day of classes and a brilliant means of exercise that I really look forward to each afternoon.
The good times
I would have to say that the best part of going to college for me is the social aspect. You have the opportunity to meet new people every semester and build long lasting friendships with them.
The tough times
Between having not been a very studious high schooler and becoming so used to working life for a number of years, I had to remind myself not to just “switch off” when I leave the campus grounds, that there was still work to be done when I got home.
Lasting lessons
I think the most important thing I have learned is that it is never too late to learn something new. I see lots of mature students like myself taking on this challenge of going back to school after years in the workforce, and I think it truly is admirable.
