Policy Statement

Douglas College believes that its facilities should remain open during normal college hours. However, the College realizes that under severe adverse weather conditions, building emergencies, or for safety reasons, a campus location could be closed.

Procedures/Rules Statement

  1. In order to provide a consistent framework for facilities closure, responsibility is assigned to the following personnel for closure at the New Westminster and David Lam Campuses and The Training Group sites:
    1. Weather Conditions - Director, Facilities Services
    2. Safety Reasons or Building Emergency - Director, Facilities Services, Director of Safety, Security and Risk Management, Vice President, Finance & Administration or College President
  2. In the event of a decision to close a College facility:
    • Every reasonable effort will be made to notify students and employees, as quickly as possible using:  
      • The College's Emergency Notification System (Public Announce System), College's Emergency Information Telephone Line: 1-877-679-0823, DC ALERTS (voicemail, text and e-mail messages to subscribers))
      • Email messages via Groupwise (for employees) and myDouglas announcements (for students)
      • Postings on the College's website
      • Various radio stations
      • College's Official Social Media sites
    • The College will make every reasonable effort to assist faculty members in making up class time due to closure;
    • The closure of the College will not result in adjustments to time off for personnel or additional compensation for make up classes;
    • Regular staff employees will be paid for the period of the closure. Auxiliary employees who have reported to work will be paid for their full shift scheduled for the first day of closure only; and
    • Regular Staff operations and Secuity personnel schedules will remain in effect unless otherwise determined by the Administrator responsible for the closure of College buildings.
