Rationale

Policy Statement

In order to recognize the excellence of retiring faculty, DouglasCollege may award the designation "Faculty Emeritus", thereby providing the opportunity for continued involvement in College activities.

Criteria

Excellence will have been sustained over a period of at least 10 years:

  1. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and related work
  2. Demonstrated outstanding contribution to the discipline/area
  3. Demonstrated outstanding contribution to the College community

Process

  1. Nominations will be submitted by the discipline/area in consultation with the nominee.
  2. Written nominations will include the demonstration of eligibility (see Criteria).
  3. Nominations will be accompanied by letter(s) from the department/area indicating general support for the appointment, as well as other references as applicable.
  4. A Faculty-level committee (FEC or a similar body with representation from all departments/programs) will review nominations and make recommendations through the Dean to the Vice-President's Academic Council (VPAC) for consideration and submission to the President for final approval.
  5. Appointees will be governed by the policies and procedures of the institution, and appointments will be continuous unless there are serious reasons for reassessment.

The President's decision in such cases will be final.

Honours/Benefits

Benefits and honours, subject to the availability of appropriate resources and funding, may include:

  1. Use of name in College calendar and in other informational and promotional materials as appropriate
  2. Inclusion in academic processes such as Convocation
  3. Invitation to College events
  4. Library privileges, including interlibrary loan
  5. Computer account
  6. Parking privileges
  7. Use of office space (again, where available)
  8. Local telephone and voicemail access
  9. Mail and photocopy privileges
  10. Use of letterhead and business cards
  11. Use of recreational facilities at employee rates
  12. Opportunities to remain engaged in such College activities as mentorship, scholarship, and strategic academic planning.
