Policy Statement

Douglas College confers the designation of Honorary Fellow for the purpose of recognizing the outstanding achievement or distinguished service by an individual on a community, provincial, national, or international scale.  In choosing recipients for this honour the College will be guided by its values and mission.

Criteria

  1. Nominations are invited from all Douglas College employees and members of the College community.
  2. Nominations must demonstrate the candidate's outstanding achievement or distinguished service.  This may include, but is not limited to, noted accomplishment in a particular field of study, excellence in public service, and making a significant contribution to society and/or the College.
  3. Exclusions:  Active members of staff, faculty, administrators, or Board members are not eligible until 3 years after their retirement/end of appointment.  People holding elected public office are not generally eligible until 3 years after the end of the public position.
  4. The designation of Honorary Fellow will not be awarded in absentia or posthumously except in the case of an untimely death following the announcement of a new Honorary Fellow recipient.

Nomination Process

Nominations will be accepted by the Honorary Fellow Selection Committee  (deadline: November 15th) for conferral at the June Graduation Ceremony the following year.

Recipients of an Honorary Fellow designation shall be referred to as Honorary Fellows.

 Terms of Reference

The Honorary Fellow Selection Committee will make recommendations to the President on the awarding of the Honorary Fellow designation.  The Committee is comprised of College representatives (VP Academic, Associate VP External Relations, Director of Marketing and Communications Office, 1 College Board Member, 2 Deans, and 2 Faculty Members).  The Committee's recommendation is presented to the College President for nomination.  As confidentiality is of utmost importance the Committee's recommendation to the President and any subsequent nomination to the Board will be completed during an 'in camera' meeting.

Nominations received by the November 15th deadline will be vetted by the Honorary Fellow Selection Committee.  The Selection Committee will present the candidates to the President for nomination.  The President will consider the nominations and forward his/her nomination to the College Board for ratification.  The College Board will notify the President and the Selection Committee of their decision by February 28/29 of the following year.

Nominations must include the following to be considered:

  1. The candidate's curriculum vitae and/or a detailed summary of the candidate's accomplishments, education, and employment summary.
  2. Letter of Nomination including detailed information to support the nomination of the candidate.

All information submitted on behalf of the nominee will be kept confidential.

Nominations will be held for three years from the date of the nomination.  After three years, if the nominee has not been selected, their name will be deleted from the list of nominees.  If the person is re-nominated, the name will again be added to the list for an additional three-year period.

Honorary Fellows need not be conferred every year.

It is understood that Honorary Fellow recipients will attend the graduation ceremony and give a speech at that ceremony.  It is also understood that the College will publish the name, picture, and a summary of the accomplishments of the recipient in College publications.

Responsibilities of the College

  1. The President's Office will be responsible for:
  1. Notifying the successful candidate and the College of the outcome.  In particular, notification must be sent to the Registrar's Office and the Marketing and Communications Office for inclusion in all graduation publications;
  2. arrangements for travel for the Honorary Fellow recipient(s);
  3. hosting the Honorary Fellow recipients during the day of the graduation; and
