Policy Statement
1. Names of Persons, Organizations or Corporations
Douglas College encourages and supports the recognition of philanthropic gifts that support students or increases the funding base of the College. Douglas College also recognizes that meritorious and outstanding service to the College or Community by a College employee or a Member of the larger community is worthy of recognition. The College may name buildings, segments of buildings, specified rooms or spaces internal or external to such buildings to honour donors, distinguished persons, organizations or corporations.
2. Names Indicating Function and Use
The Director, Facilities Services may name buildings, segments of buildings, and other facilities where the name is purely functional or and indicates the use to which a facility is being put, i.e. "Geology Department, Library, etc".
Procedures/Rules Statement
A. Procedures
1. Requests for the naming or re-naming of buildings or facilities (not involving function and use) shall be forwarded to the Foundation/Community Resource Development office. Requests will be considered:
(a) where an appropriate gift or bequest is made to the College, designated for that purpose, or;
(b) where it is the intention to honour a former member of the College or the wider community who has made an outstanding contribution to the College life and to the spirit of the community within the College, or to the larger community
2. The Foundation Office, upon receipt of all such requests, shall forthwith advise and consult with the President and other individuals as required, regarding the same.
3. All requests shall be forwarded to an Advisory Committee on Naming Buildings and Facilities
4. The Advisory Committee shall be comprised of the Director, Facilities Services the Executive Director of the Foundation, the Director of Marketing and Communications and 2 ad hoc members when deemed necessary.
5. Recommendations of the Advisory Committee shall be forwarded to the President for review and approval.
6.Naming of a Campus will require College Board approval.
B. Criteria
1. Buildings, segments of buildings, and other facilities named after people, organizations and corporations:
(a) When a name is proposed as a consequence of a gift or bequest, guidelines will be established taking into account the prominence and size of the location, a comparison to existing ?named? areas and the capital cost of a new, restored, or older facility, to decide if the gift or bequest is appropriate for the purpose of this policy.
(b) When the intention is to honour a person, and no gift is involved, and in the case of College employees or members of the larger community, the Advisory Committee will consider meritorious or outstanding service to the College or Community. Only in exceptional circumstances will facilities be named to honour an employee while the person remains in the full-time employment of the College.
2. Buildings, segments of buildings and other facilities named by function and location:
(a) Criteria for naming will generally include: consistency with ongoing use/majority occupancy, i.e. English, Biology
- salient geographic features i.e. Concourse Level, South, etc.
3. General:
(a) Naming a building, segments of buildings, or other facilities after persons, organizations, and corporations, does not imply that the name or names used will necessarily be used in perpetuity.
(b) When a building is demolished, replaced or substantially renovated, or where the occupancy changes and the former name is no longer appropriate then a request for a new name will be considered. It may be appropriate to place a plaque in, or on, a new building to indicate that it occupies the site of a building formerly known by another name. Such plaques should recognize the person, organization or corporation after whom the former building was named. It may also be appropriate that a request for a new name will be considered to name part of a new building after a person for whom the former building was named.
(c) When it is proposed that a facility or room within a building be relocated within the same building, or to a different building, provided that the new facility will service the same original purpose, no recommendation from the Committee or approval under this policy is required to re-locate the name.
