Policy Statement
The Douglas College Web Site has become the primary medium for providing information about Douglas College. The on-line Calendar is the official version of the Douglas College Calendar. Printed information materials increasingly direct readers to the College site for timely and comprehensive information. Acknowledging the Web site's increasingly prominent role in communications, Douglas College recognizes the need for a consistent and high quality site that effectively serves the needs of the communities we serve and the College itself.
Scope of this Policy
The scope of this policy covers Web content residing on the Douglas College network.
This policy will be consistent with the Douglas College Values, Mission and Goals and relevant College policies.
Definitions
Douglas College Web content is organized into three categories:
- The Douglas College Web Site (http://www.douglas.bc.ca/),
The Douglas College Web Site is the College's World Wide Web presence and includes any Web pages under the address of www.douglas.bc.ca (department, program, or service plan included). - The Online Learning Site ans the associated LMS (Learning Management System),
Course content within a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Blackboard, or information residing on http://www.douglas.bc.ca/ceit - Douglas College Affiliated Sites (http://people.douglas.bc.ca/)
Douglas College affiliated sites are sites that have demonstrated relationships to activities at Douglas College and are of value to the College but are not directly administered by a Douglas College department, program or service (e.g. College Chemistry Canada).
Procedures/Rules Statement
A. Douglas College Web Site (www.douglas.bc.ca);
1. The Communications & Marketing Office collaborates with and consults faculty, staff and administrators in the development of College Web pages. The Douglas College Communications & Marketing Office has final approval of all Douglas College Web pages residing on www.douglas.bc.ca.
2. Creation & Maintenance
Web pages on the Douglas College Web, including department, program and service pages, will be created by the Marketing and Communications Office, following approval from the relevant Dean, Director or Vice President. In some specific cases, College employees maintaining pages on the Douglas College Web Site for their department, program or service (e.g. Library) may be given access to do so. This decision will be made at the discretion of the Director of Communications & Marketing or designate.
3. All pages on the Douglas College Web Site must adhere to the College's Web Standards (as outlined in the Douglas College Publishing Standards Manual).
4. Faculty biographies containing relevant pedagogical content (including academic credentials) are encouraged and will reside on the Douglas College Web Site (linked from respective departments). Biographies may also include a photo of the faculty member (if approved by the faculty member).
B. The Online Learning Site (http://douglasonline.ca) And the associated LMS (Learning Management System):
1. The Centre for Educational and Information Technology (CEIT) will collaborate with and consult faculty, staff and administrators in the development of the Learning Management System (LMS). CEIT has final approval of all pages, residing directly on the http://douglasonline.ca/site and overall responsibility for the operation of the related Learning Management System (LMS). The instructional content residing inside the LMS, is the responsibility of the respective faculty or department.
2. The Centre for Educational and Instructional Technology (CEIT) will be responsible for creating new instructional templates and new class-space in the Learning Management System (LMS), following approval from the respective Dean, Director or Vice President. CEIT will also be responsible for overall maintenance of the LMS environment.
3. Instructional content comprising a required component of a Douglas College course will be contained in a Douglas College Learning Management System (LMS)
4. Douglas College employees who have created pages/sites for course use on a Douglas College Web Site have until the implementation of Luminis to move these pages/sites into the Douglas College Learning Management System (LMS). Pages not moved by this time will be removed from the Douglas College Web Site.
C. Affiliated Sites (http://people douglas.bc.ca):
1. Affiliated sites are developed and maintained by individual employees and are subject to the following conditions in addition to the general provisions of this policy and to general College policies.
- Affiliated sites will be initiated with the approval of the relevant Administrator of Reference (a Dean, Director or Vice President) and the MCO.
- The employee who maintains the affiliated site will provide the MCO with a paragraph describing the relationship between the affiliated site and Douglas College.
- Affiliated sites will not be linked from the Douglas College home site, except at the discretion of the MCOl, where such linking is deemed to be in the interest of the College.
- All affiliated sites will have a home page that includes the date that the site was last updated.
- Such affiliated sites will be hosted under http://people.douglas.bc.ca
- Information not relevant to Douglas College business will not be included on affiliated sites.
- All affiliated sites will be maintained in a responsible manner and any inappropriate links or content (as per the general College policies) are required to be corrected promptly,
2. Due to resource constraints, there will be no MCO or CEIT support available to either the creators or clients of these sites.
3. Student affiliated sites:
The same rules as above apply to student generated Web sites with the following addition:
- To reside on the Douglas College network, a student organized Web site must have a direct affiliation with a Douglas College educational program or College service AND sponsorship from a faculty member who will monitor the site.
