College gets access to federal research funds

We are pleased to announce that Douglas College has been approved by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) as an institution eligible to authorize applications to NSERC and administer any funds awarded. As an institution that has successfully met all of NSERC's eligibility requirements, Douglas College researchers will now be able to participate as applicants in the Idea to Innovation Program and as co-applicants in collaboration with university faculty on a number of research project grant programs, provided they meet certain eligibility requirements. December 6th Remembrance Video

The December 6th slideshow is composed of images, text, music, soundscape and silence.

It begins on December 6th, 1989, when fourteen women were murdered at L'Ecole Polytechnique of the University of Montreal. The devastation, loss and political awakening caused by their assassinations are revealed in epitaphs written by members of their families, hand-stamped on tiles that encircle the national women's monument, Marker of Change.

From there, we follow the activism of a Vancouver community under siege, struggling to draw attention to the high number of women murdered and missing on the Downtown Eastside. Here, we witness the birth of the anti-murder campaign organized by Indigenous women, the February 14th Women's Memorial March.

The show closes with images of some of the memorials that have been created across Canada in places like Montreal, Guelph, Ottawa, London, Moncton, Calgary and the Highway of Tears.

Advanced Education Minister Dr. Moira Stilwell visits Douglas

Vice President of Uganda visits Douglas

Friday October 23 was an exciting day at Douglas College!

College Board Chair Paul Wates and I were pleased to welcome Dr. Moira Stilwell, British Columbia's Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development, along with Dawn Minty, Executive Director, Colleges and Universities Branch, to our David Lam Campus.

Minister Stilwell was joined by Iain Black, MLA for Port Moody-Coquitlam and Minister for Small Business, Technology and Economic Development; and Doug Horne, MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain.

This was Minister Stilwell's first visit to our David Lam Campus and we took the opportunity to take the group on a tour. Acting VP Education Jan Carrie and Acting Health Sciences Dean Silvia Wilson provided valuable information, and several other faculty members and staff had a chance to talk about their areas. As a physician, the Minister enjoyed visiting with students in our state-of-the-art Health Science labs. Minister Black was particularly impressed with the budding entrepreneurs he met in the Training Group's Self-Employment Program.

Later that afternoon, Paul and I welcomed His Excellency the Vice President of Uganda, Dr. Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya, to the David Lam Campus along with His Excellency Uganda's High Commissioner to Canada, George Abola. The visit was arranged by John Halani, Uganda's Honorary Consul to British Columbia, who has done much to facilitate the College's activities in Uganda over the past several years.

We were pleased that Minister Stilwell was able to stay for our meeting with the Ugandan delegation. We were also joined by Richard Stewart, Mayor of Coquitlam.

It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about the College's activities in Uganda. Graduate Erin Davis expressed how her placement in Uganda as a Community Social Service Worker student enriched her education, and Bob Shebib spoke about the mutual benefits of sending students to work with agencies in Uganda.

We also discussed our application to the Canadian International Development Agency ( CIDA ) for funding to expand our activities in Uganda. The Vice President and the High Commissioner expressed their full support and promised to provide letters of support to strengthen our CIDA application.
