Autism Specialty Studies
Did you know that Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are the most common neurological disability affecting children today? Once considered rare, ASD in fact affects up to one-in-150 children in BC. This means the need for practitioners who can work effectively with children with ASD is growing rapidly.
Douglas College offers three unique, laddered programs in the Autism Specialty Studies stream.
Behaviour Interventionist (BI)
Develop the expertise needed to work one-on-one under the supervision of a behaviour consultant with young children who have ASD. Online courses are available for this one-of-a-kind program in BC. On completion, certificate credits may be transferred towards a full CCS diploma.
Classroom and Community Support (CCS)
You're creative, flexible - and believe that all children and adults, including those with disabilities, deserve opportunities to develop and succeed. Classroom and Community Support (CCS) prepares students for rewarding careers in schools and community agencies as education assistants, instructional facilitators, community support workers and supported employment practitioners. A Behaviour Intervention (BI) specialty is available to CCS diploma students. Diploma graduates may also block transfer into several bachelor degrees.
Disability and Applied Behaviour Analysis (DABA)
Count yourself among the BC professionals with an expertise in disability and applied behaviour analysis. Learn how to analyze behaviour and create effective strategies to help children and adults with disabilities, including ASD, learn and improve functional behaviours.
This interdisciplinary program is a terrific option for K-12 teachers wishing to enhance their skills while working towards a higher pay level. It is also a great step for behaviour consultants and other professionals towards becoming a BACB Certified Assistant Behaviour Analyst. Degree students in their third or fourth year are also welcome to take DABA courses as a specialty and/or elective.
Evening, online and weekend courses are available for this first post-diploma/degree credential of its kind west of Manitoba.
Online Autism Outreach Training program
Are you a Behaviour Interventionist working with a child who has autism and living in a rural or remote area of B.C.? Are you looking to expand your knowledge and upgrade your skills?
If so, the Online Autism Outreach Training program, created in partnership with the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), is for you.
Flexible Options
All three programs have options including prior learning assessment and post-secondary transfer. Graduates of related programs receive up to 75% transfer credits.
