RTL at the College

College-wide discussions about the future of research on teaching and learning at Douglas brought hearty response that resulted in a number of recommendations for moving RTL work forward.  Learn more.

As a learning-centred institution, Douglas has always placed a primary focus on teaching and learning; however, full teaching loads leave little time for intensive scholarly research. The aims of Douglas's RTL projects are:

  • to foster increased reflective and scholarly practices
  • to connect the analysis of our work with students to educational theory
  • to build a base of activity in the full research on teaching and learning.

Research on Teaching and Learning is promoted at the College in the following ways:

  • The Douglas College Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Cohort Research Project
  • The Research on Teaching and Learning Leadership Team
  • Funding Opportunities for Research on Teaching and Learning
  • Publication and Presentation Venues for Research on Teaching and Learning.

The Douglas College SoTL Cohort Research Project

This cohort-based, cross-disciplinary research project spans the three years of Douglas College’s involvement in the CASTL Institutional Leadership Program. The project assists faculty in developing or maintaining research currency by:

  • Working through the research process with a focus on teaching and learning
  • Investigating a shared research question re: student perceptions of engaged learning.

Subsequent annual iterations will look at broader and deeper data collection and analysis. Questions about the Douglas College SoTL Cohort Research Project can be addressed to Alison Thomas.

2008 Report from Phase One of the SoTL Cohort Research Project

This report summarizes themes in interviews with 12 Douglas College students regarding their views of what factors allow for engaged student learning in our classrooms. Authors Alison Thomas and Sarah Stephens received a RTL grant to complete this report.  SoTL Phase One Report
