BUSN 1111 Small Business Management (3 credits)

(formerly BUSN 111)

This course provides students in the Habitat Restoration Program with an introduction to the theoretical and practical aspects of the start-up and management of a new venture. Topics include business plan development, financing a business, marketing, financial management and systems, personnel management, customer relations, leadership and communications. Emphasis will be placed on the start-up of a small business consulting practice.

BUSN 1198 Business Explorations I (3 credits)

This course provides an introductory overview of the Canadian business system in context with the contemporary business world - how it functions, and how it relates to specific areas such as marketing, production and finance. The course provides a specific insight into actual business operations and some of the major areas of concern regarding the role of business in society. Attention is paid to enhancing business vocabulary and strategies in studying business.

Foundation Program students who successfully complete this course will gain equivalent credit to BUSN 1200.

BUSN 1250 Exploring Business Ownership (3 credits)

This is an introductory course for people who want to investigate entrepreneurship as a career option and their suitability as potential business owners. A variety of business areas are covered, including the development of a specific business plan.

BUSN 1315 Supervisory Management HIM (3 credits)

(formerly BUSN 315)

This course will provide Health Information Management students with key skills related to and knowledge of first-line (supervisory) management. Participants will experience the supervisory role as a special case of leadership - the only level of management that interfaces directly with non-management personnel. Communication, leadership and motivational skills will be given special emphasis. An experiential approach will be used to facilitate the learning of basic supervisory skills such as interviewing, appraisal, training and leadership.

BUSN 1320 Business Law I (3 credits)

This course will provide a general review of the meaning, sources and administration of business law and a more detailed examination of the law of contracts with particular reference to business situations. The course is designed to give the student an understanding of business law including consumer protection, legislation and potential changes in the legal climate of Canada.

This course will cover the mathematical interpretation of fundamental business economic concepts with applications to managerial decision-making. Topics covered will include linear and non-linear equations, time value of money, marginal and break-even analysis and introduction to statistics.

BUSN 1335 Introduction to Biostatistics (3 credits)

This course, restricted to Health Information Management students, is an introduction to biostatistics - statistical methods applied to data derived from biological sciences and medicine. Topics covered include descriptive statistics, probability concepts, probability distributions such as the binomial, Poisson and normal distributions, sampling distribution and linear estimation.

This course provides an opportunity to explore career possibilities and strategies in business. Professional business people from a variety of industries and functions will be brought face-to-face with students in a series of weekly meetings to discuss professional problems, goals, culture and career strategies. Students will assess their values, abilities, interests and needs in order to clarify job and life goals. Job search, networking, resume writing and interviewing skills will be addressed.

This course provides students with analytical frameworks for entrepreneurship self-assessment and developing a business strategy. Special attention is given to the practices followed and problems encountered in the challenging process of establishing a business from two mainstream perspectives: store-front and home-based business operations. Topics include: entrepreneurship self-assessment and career preparation, product-market strategies, the evaluation of business opportunities that are relevant to start-up and growth, franchising and acquisitions.

This course will provide students with an introduction to strategic management, which students will practice using a computerized business simulation. Topics covered include company missions, external environment, internal analysis and company profile, objective and strategies in the long and short term, strategic analysis and implementation. This course will provide students with an introduction to forecasting and statistics. Students will learn to solve problems using computer spreadsheets. Topics include: forecasting, measures of central tendency and dispersion, probability, sampling, normal and binomial distributions, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. This course enables students in the Administrative Management Program to acquire practical experience in the functions of management by participating in the day-to-day operation of an organization. BUSN 4405 Graduating Applied Research Project (3 credits)

This course is a capstone course for the International Business Studies Program (IBS). The focus is on the nature of the international business environment - financial, cultural, social, political and legal - and the manner in which this environment has changed and continues to change. A combination of lecture, videos and supplementary materials will follow the order of the chapters in the text. Cases will be assigned to and presented in class by students. Opportunity prevailing, students will be placed in actual practicum sites, working on international projects. Some of the projects will be used in case analysis and class presentations.

BUSN 4420 Commercial Law (3 credits)

This demanding, accelerated course (equivalent to BUSN 1320 and BUSN 2420) provides an introduction to the Canadian legal system, tort law, professional liability, contract law, sale of goods law, negotiable instruments, creditor rights, security interests, bankruptcy, business organizations, publicly traded securities and labour law. Students learn to avoid potential legal problems, recognize those situations calling for legal expertise and to communicate more effectively with legal counsel. Work load is heavy and pace rapid in this course.

BUSN 4460 Leadership: Theory and Practice (3 credits)

This seminar based course will provide students with an introduction to the theory and practice of leadership through an examination of significant literary, historical, management, psychological and philosophical sources for insights into the nature and character of leadership.  The course lectures, readings and discussions will focus on a several questions, beginning with the most fundamental: “What is Leadership?” and “What is good Leadership?” The relationship and roles of leaders and followers, the moral responsibility of leaders, the consequences of ineffective or bad leadership will be examined and discussed.  One of the major tasks of the course will be to give students insights into the practice of leadership, by considering leadership as a “service to society” through the public, private and nonprofit organizations in which they choose to make their contributions.

BUSN 4490 Applied Legal and Ethical Decision Making for Managers, Professionals and Executives (3 credits)

This course is intended for senior students in the applied business degree programs. It is an application-driven course that will focus on real-world cases and examine both the theory and practice of legal, moral and social decision making in the 21st century. The emphasis, however, will be on practice as opposed to theory. The course will begin with a brief introduction to the various leading theories of business issues in this business area, and then focus on the process of how managerial decisions are made or not made. The students will be introduced to several models to apply and hopefully emulate in their personal careers, followed by an intensive look at numerous real-world cases that will challenge and compel students to examine their own values, morals and choices in life. Cases will be drawn from the private, public and non-profit sectors of our society and economy. The last quarter of the course will focus on the role of leadership in the successful implementation of management decision making and practice.

BUSN 4500 Career and Portfolio Development (1.5 credits)

This course will enable students to complete their work experience required for the Bachelor of Business Administration. Students will demonstrate how classroom learning experiences are reflected in the workplace. Students will demonstrate the connection between classroom and practical experience through the completion of a learning portfolio produced to reflect knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom as well as in the workplace. Students will also prepare and present an oral report that will demonstrate the type of experience acquired/practised on the job, a full description of all tasks completed, and the organizational and interpersonal skills utilized in the workplace.
