Career and Employment Preparation Courses
These courses are only for students enrolled in Career and Employment Preparation and are taken as corequisites. The program is offered in the Fall and Winter Semesters.
CAEP 0100 Assessment and Intake
This course is designed to assist adults with a disability in taking the necessary preparatory steps to enter the full-time CAEP program. The course enables students to make informed decisions about entering the program and assists students to become prepared to achieve success in the program. This is a required course taken by students prior to entrance into other CAEP courses.
CAEP 0201 Career Exploration and Planning (3 credits)
This course is designed to provide adults with a disability with an ongoing supportive environment in which to explore career alternatives. It will include self assessment, job training information and the development of a career plan with short and long term goals.
Prerequisite: CAEP 0100
CAEP 0202 Job Preparation and Maintenance (3 credits)
This course is designed to prepare adults with a disability for employment by increasing awareness of those factors which affect job maintenance. It will include exploration of employee/employer attitudes and expectations, development of self management skills and work-related communication skills. Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate work habits, as learned.
Prerequisite: CAEP 0100
CAEP 0203 Interpersonal Skills for the Work Place (3 credits)
This course is designed to provide students with the skills to enter new working and training situations with increased confidence and to assertively handle employment-related interpersonal situations. In particular, students will learn to communicate positively and effectively about their disability and any accommodations that may be required for their success on the job.
CAEP 0204 Job Search Skills (3 credits)
This course is designed to provide adults with a disability with a comprehensive overview of job seeking strategies. It covers the basic tenets of job search applicable to the general population while recognizing the unique circumstances of adults with a disability.
Prerequisite: CAEP 0100
CAEP 0205 Work Placement (3 credits)
This placement will provide experience in at least two different work or training environments related to career/job choices. Students will test their ideas, gather information and gain exposure to work sites. Students are also expected to demonstrate and practise appropriate work habits.
CAEP 0300 Employment Readiness (1 credit)
This course is designed to prepare students with a disability for employment. It provides practical information to increase awareness and practices behaviours which will contribute to job success, including appropriate social and communication skills for the work site. As well, students will examine realistic expectations of obtaining specific employment in today's job market.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
CAEP 0310 Work Experience Practicum (5.5 credits)
This course is designed to provide students with a disability the opportunity for work experience in the community. Students are placed at a work site in a supervised and supportive atmosphere in a field that matches their interests and abilities as well as suits their career goals.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
CAEP 0320 Job Search Skills (1 credit)
This course is designed to provide adults with a disability the skills necessary to find appropriate work placements, paid employment or volunteer positions in a field that matches their career goals.
