CODS 5100: Co-Occurring Disorders: Introduction (3 credits)
This course will focus on understanding the etiology and nature of co-occurring disorders. Students will explore basic concepts of mental illness and addiction. Students will examine the use of current DSM as a reference tool for understanding mental illness and addiction disorders. Models for the delivery of services to clients with co-occurring disorders will be examined from a theoretical applied perspective. The current (BC) system will be critically examined from an evident-based, best practice perspective.

CODS 5122: Counselling Skills for Persons with Co-Occurring Disorders (3 credits)
This methods course examines the use of interviewing and counselling skills for working with people who have co-occurring disorders. Students will explore selected practice theories and methods for engaging and retaining this multi-barriered group in treatment and support programs.

CODS 5200: Advanced Issues in Co-Occurring Disorders (3 credits)
This course will build on the foundation knowledge provided in CODS 5100. Students will review and discuss advanced issues that result from the co-morbid conditions of mental illness and substance use and identify system intervention and support strategies for this population. The students will have an opportunity to adapt this knowledge to their own practice and acquire a broader understanding of its application to community social services.

CODS 5222: Counselling Skills for Persons with Co-Occurring Disorders (3 credits)
This methods course continues to develop concepts introduced in CODS 5122. Students will explore concepts and theories for working with groups and families. Students will have an opportunity to develop their practice versatility by application of selected intervention models.

CODS 5240: Practicum in Co-Occurring Disorders (6 credits)
This course provides opportunities for students to practice skills in selected sites under supervision. These sites may include current/past employment in which case the practicum will focus on specific roles not similar to current/past employment. Students will integrate and reflect upon their educational, personal and professional experience in the practicum and associated seminar.
