Co-operative Education Courses

COOP 1100 Co-op Education I (9 credits)

(formerly COOP 100)

This course enables students to apply and develop knowledge and skills on the job. Over the duration of the paid work placement (12-16 weeks), students, with the support of a faculty advisor, use, enhance and add to their transferable job skills and program specific skills. They set learning objectives for the work experience and complete a work placement project. This is the first of two compulsory courses which students must successfully complete to receive a Co-operative Education designation on their transcript.

Prerequisite: Co-op Orientation Workshop and Co-op Job Search Workshops or BUSN 2201 and submission of designated application and job search documents and completion of at least 18 program-related credits which include courses in numeracy, language literacy and computer literacy and a cumulative grade point average of 2.33 or permission of the Dean.

COOP 1200 Co-op Education IA (9 credits)

(formerly COOP 200)

This course is an optional work placement which occurs in the semester immediately after Co-operative Education I. It enables students to apply and develop more extensively their knowledge and skills prior to returning to their academic program of studies. Over the duration of the paid work placement (12-16 weeks), students, with the support of a faculty advisor, use and expand transferable job skills and program specific skills. Students set learning objectives for the work experience and complete a work placement project. This course is not one of the courses required to receive a Co-operative Education designation.

Prerequisite: COOP 1100 and submission of designated application and job search documents and a cumulative grade point average of 2.33 or permission of the Dean

COOP 2300 Co-op Education II (9 credits)

(formerly COOP 300)

This second mandatory course enables students to expand their transferable job skills and their program-related knowledge and skills by building upon their previous Co-op work experience and their further academic studies. With the support of a faculty advisor, students set learning objectives for the work experience and complete a work placement project. As this is a second or third work placement, students are encouraged to seek greater responsibility and/or more challenging tasks and projects than they had or were involved in during the previous work placement(s). This course is intended to enhance the student's career success upon graduation from her/his chosen program. This course must be successfully completed to received a Co-operative Education designation on the transcript.

Prerequisite: COOP 1100 and one full-time semester of program-related academic studies which is subsequent to completion of COOP 1100 and submission of designated application and job search documents and a cumulative grade point average of 2.33 or permission of the Dean

COOP 2400 Co-op Education IIA (9 credits)

(formerly COOP 400)

This final co-operative education course is an optional work placement which occurs in the semester immediately after Co-operative Education II. It enables students to apply and develop more extensively their knowledge and skills prior to finishing their academic program of studies. Over the duration of the paid work placement (12-16 weeks), students, with the support of a faculty advisor, use and expand learned academic transferable job search and program specific skills. Students set learning outcomes for the work experience and complete a work-term project. Students are encouraged to seek greater responsibility and/or challenging tasks and projects than they had or were involved in during the previous work placement(s). This course is not one of the courses required to receive a Co-operative Education designation.

COOP 3500 Co-op Education III (9 credits)

This co-operative education course is designed for BBA students to meet their work experience degree exit requirement. It can be used in place of BUSN 4500.  This is a work placement (500 hours) where students, with the support of the BBA Coordinator, will apply and expand learned academic transferable and program specific skills.  Students will develop and use job search skills.  Students will set learning outcomes for the work experience and will complete both a written and oral report outlining the nature and tasks of the work experience, detailing what they learned, and articulating how their academic and workplace experiences are connected particularly as related to the ten broad BBA learning outcomes.  A student who successfully completes Coop 1100 plus one of Coop 1200, 2300 or 2400 plus this course, Coop 3500, is eligible for a Co-operative Education designation on her/his transcript for her/his degree.
