Classroom and Community Support Courses
These courses are only for those students enrolled in the Classroom and Community Support Program. This restriction may be waived on an individual basis by the classroom instructor or Program Coordinator. Behaviour Interventionistist Citation students are required to complete CCSD 1140, CCSD 1150 and CCSD 2334.
CCSD 1100 Online Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) (3 credits)
In CCSD 1100, practitioners challenge those courses identified in Gateway Assessment where they are seen to have sufficient skills and experience. This is done by means of some written work and proctored, online quizzes. The student receives academic credit for those courses they satisfactorily challenge.
CCSD 1140 Introduction to Practice (3 credits)
This introductory course explores the components of exemplary practice and service delivery through co-operative learning, lecture, guest speakers and observations in the field. Practitioner roles and responsibilities will be examined from a range of fields, including: behaviour intervention, classroom assistance, community support and job coaching.

CCSD 1150 Teaching and Learning: Foundations (3 credits)
This course builds students’ observation, planning and teaching skills to create or support meaningful learning opportunities in response to diverse learning styles. Using a common set of values, students will explore several teaching strategies and how these match with different learners' needs.

CCSD 1170 Exploring Exceptionalities (1.5 credits)
In this survey course, students will explore a variety of developmental characteristics of persons with exceptionalities. This includes an examination of the etiology, diagnosis and other implications of developmental disabilities.
CCSD 1220 Working with Others (3 credits)
This methods course emphasizes the development of communication versatility in working with people. Students will explore and apply interpersonal and facilitation skills such as information gathering, perception checking, goal setting, active listening, assertiveness and conflict resolution. Models that promote empowerment and awareness of self and others will be presented for examination and application to practice.

CCSD 1240 Practicum I (4.5 credits)
This course provides opportunities for students to practice skills in selected sites under supervision. Students will integrate and reflect upon their educational, personal and professional experiences in practicum and seminar.
Prerequisite: CCSD 1140 and CCSD 1150 and CFCS 1110 and CFCS 1120 or CFCS 1121 and CFCS 1130
CCSD 1250 Teaching and Learning: Adaptations and Modifications (3 credits)
This course provides students with opportunities to develop collaborative strategies for planning, implementing and monitoring learning opportunities based on individuals' dynamic characteristics, needs and interests. Using caring and communication as foundations, students will develop, analyze, modify and adapt teaching strategies.

CCSD 1260 Augmentative and Alternative Communication (3 credits)
This course provides students with opportunities to examine and reflect on their roles in supporting and promoting communication with and by people who are non-verbal. Students will explore specific methods and strategies of augmentative communication and principles underlying their use with individuals in community settings.

CCSD 1270 Perspectives on Disability (1.5 credits)
In this course students will explore a variety of perspectives regarding disability. Content topics will include: typical responses to diversity, language and labels, disability theory, models of disability, disability culture, advocacy and self-advocacy.

CCSD 2100 Flexible Completion
This course provides opportunities for individualized study which meet the learning needs of students who are transferring credit from another institution or program and/or are challenging courses through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). Working with program faculty, students will develop and complete assignments/projects/portfolios which meet individually-identified criteria that do not match existing course offerings.

CCSD 2230 Support Across the Lifespan (3 credits)
This course examines and evaluates inclusive school systems and current models of support for people with developmental disabilities across the lifespan. Students will be asked to examine different school and community supports and services using a quality of life theoretical framework.

CCSD 2334 Supporting Families (1.5 credits)
In this course, students explore the various perspectives on families with member(s) who live with disabilities. Students will have the opportunity to examine the strengths and stresses of these families, the interdependence of family and community, and the unique role of the practitioner in supporting families.

CCSD 2335 Person-Centred Planning and Accountability (1.5 credits)
In this course, students will focus on the issues and considerations in life planning for individuals. The course examines how to identify and obtain information crucial in the process of person-centred planning. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of planning as a dynamic process involving building relationships.

CCSD 2340 Practicum II (4.5 credits)
This course provides opportunities for students to practice skills in selected sites. Students will integrate and reflect upon their educational, personal and professional experiences in practicum and seminar.

CCSD 2350 Teaching and Learning: Positive Behaviour Supports (3 credits)
In this advanced course, students will apply principles of teaching and learning to support people whose actions challenge us. The emphasis will be on communication and responding to individuals in contexts.

CCSD 2370 Personal Assistance (1.5 credits)
This applied course emphasizes support skills in personal care and health-related procedures. Students will practice specific skills and reflect on the underlying values of caring interactions while supporting people in their day-to-day lives.

CCSD 2420 Personal and Professional Leadership (3 credits)
This capstone course is designed to deepen understanding and application of skills introduced through the previous three semesters. Students will have the opportunity to explore personal and professional leadership opportunities and challenges available in education and human service practice contexts.

CCSD 2440 Service-Learning (3 credits)
This applied course uses a service-learning model as a means for students to refine practice skills and make direct contributions to the community. Students have the option of completing a service-learning preceptorship practicum in a typical practice setting or completing a unique service-learning project that would benefit others and provide opportunities for individualized out-of-the-ordinary learning.

CCSD 2460 Augmentative and Alternative Communication (3 credits)

CCSD 2480 Community Building (3 credits)
An introduction to the art and craft of community building, this course provides opportunities to explore the challenge of community development and focuses on the practical skills of finding, creating and nurturing spaces in which all people are valued. Strategies for strengthening family involvement and facilitating social networks will be explored.
