Disability and Applied Behaviour Analysis Courses
DACS 5111 Disability in Context (3 credits)
This upper level undergraduate course examines historical and contemporary constructions of disability. It will highlight various theoretical frameworks for interpreting the nature and meaning of disability. It will also provide an overview of the etiology and characteristics of several disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, etc.
Prerequisite: None
DACS 5112 Autism Spectrum Disorder Community of Practice: Selected Topics 1 (1.5 credits)
This upper level course bridges theory and practice by blending informal and formal learning inside an online community of practice. Topical issues regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) research, support, and treatment approaches will be the focus of this multi-disciplinary course.
Prerequisites: DACS 5111, DACS 5121
DACS 5113 Autism Spectrum Disorder Community of Practice: Selected Topics II (1.5 credits)
This upper level course follows Selected Topics 1 and continues to bridge informal and formal learning inside a dynamic multi-disciplinary online community of practice. In this course, students choose five individualized learning modules on which to concentrate their areas of professional interest.
Prerequisites: DACS 5112
DACS 5121 Applied Behaviour Analysis: Basic Principles (3 credits)
This upper level course will introduce students to the science of applied behaviour analysis (ABA). The basic principles of operant conditioning including stimulus control, motivation, reinforcement, punishment, extinction, and schedules of reinforcement will be emphasized using examples of everyday behaviours. Students will also learn how these principles can be applied to persons with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Prerequisites: None
DACS 5122 Applied Behaviour Analysis: Behavioural Techniques (3 credits)
This upper level undergraduate course builds upon the science of applied behaviour analysis (ABA). Concepts include ABA definitions and characteristics, behavioural assessments, intervention outcomes and strategies, behaviour change procedures and systems support. All topics will be addressed within the context of current ethical standards.
Prerequisites: DACS 5121
DACS 5123 Applied Behaviour Analysis: Research and Applications (3 credits)
This upper level undergraduate course builds upon the science of applied behaviour analysis (ABA). This course focuses on the use of the scientific method to evaluate behaviourally-based interventions and the applications of concepts to modify behaviour. Topics include single-subject experimental designs, variables (including dependent, independent and confounding), data collection, the graphic display of behavioural data, verbal behaviour, antecedent controls, maintenance and generalization.
Prerequisite: DACS 5121
