It will provide the skills of instrumentation in the fitting of contact lenses, the process of refractive error determination, the conversion and verification of prescriptions, and the examination of the relationship between contact lens fit, corneal health and residual refractive error. It provides students the ability needed to evaluate suitability for contact wear, by patient ocular history and examination. It will provide the student the ability to design the appropriate contact lens parameters, to select the appropriate material, to train the patient on proper handling technique, lens care and hygiene. It will identify refractive surgeries, the measurement of intraocular pressure and related professional standards of practice.
Prerequisite: DOPT 1310 or meeting direct entry requirements
Lecture: 60 hours
Distance: 90 hours
DOPT 2111 Clinical in Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies I (3 credits)
This course provides learning opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills acquired from related theory and laboratory courses to the contact lens dispensary. Students will be placed in the campus vision centre or pre-approved practicum locations where they will simulate a retail contact lens practice. They will complete their contact lens dispensing skills under direct supervision of the course instructor or program-approved preceptor. Students will perform all duties pertaining to efficient operation of a contact lens practice including patient booking, contact lens fitting and analysis, the steps involved in an automated sight test including over-refraction, and patient education on lens care and handling. Contraindications to the automated sight testing will be acquired through studying the Professional Standards of Practice. A one-week on-campus (laboratory and clinical) instruction component will take place near the end of the semester to complete the course.
Prerequisites: DOPT 1310 or upon direct entrance requirements
Corequisite: DOPT 2113
