MODL 1191 Basic Chinese I (Mandarin) (3 credits)
This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of Chinese. It is designed to provide them with basic oral and written communicative skills through the study of vocabulary, grammar and culture. Chinese is used in class as much as possible.

MODL 2212 Advanced French Language and Composition II (3 credits)
This course is designed for students who have completed MODL 2211 or for French immersion students who have completed Français 12 and have a good knowledge of French grammar. It is aimed at refining and strengthening the skills acquired in previous levels, particularly reading, writing and oral expression; and at providing a deeper understanding of the Francophone culture through the works of Francophone writers.

MODL 1153 Introduction to the Language and Cultures of the Spanish Speaking World (3 credits)
This course provides an introduction to a wide range of language and cultural practices and issues specific to the Spanish-speaking world, and the critical tools from diverse methodologies needed to analyse and understand them. The course, which focuses on the interaction between the Spanish language and the cultures that underlie it, is designed to increase students’ ability to navigate more meaningfully within these cultures and potentially use Spanish more effectively. Written, audio and visual cultural texts are examined. The course is taught in English and prior knowledge of Spanish is not required.
