Assessment Testing may be required for registration in some or all of the courses listed below.
OADM 1103 Introduction to Keyboarding (3 credits)
This course is an excellent introduction for anyone taking computer courses. Its purpose is to develop touch-typing skills to a minimum of 25 accurate words per minute on straight-copy timings. A popular software program will analyze individual weaknesses and prescribe appropriate drills for maximum speed and accuracy. Computer functions will be learned as required.

OADM 1114 Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology I (3 credits)
This course is designed to teach the medical language by the study of prefixes, suffixes, root words, abbreviation and pronunciation of words. Anatomy and physiology are included in order to increase the understanding of the medical vocabulary. Terminology will better enable the Medical Office Assistant student to prepare for work in all medical environments including the preparation of the student for medical transcription.

OADM 1151 Medical Administrative Procedures (3 credits)
This course is designed to introduce the student to the administrative duties and procedures required in a medical office/hospital setting. Topics covered will include reception skills, appointment scheduling, telephone techniques, interpersonal skills, stress management, inventory control, mail processing, filing and record management procedures. Medical law, ethics and financial records will form an integral part of the course.

OADM 1214 Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology II (3 credits)
This course is designed to further the necessary language skills of the Medical Office Clerical Assistant. It includes the circulatory, skeletal, muscular, integumentary and endocrine systems. The causes, transmission and treatment of diseases of the above systems are discussed. The medical vocabulary and knowledge necessary for the medical office assistant in the specialty areas of oncology, nuclear medicine, radiology and psychiatry are included.

OADM 1218 Legal Office Procedures-Introduction and Corporate Law (3 credits)
This course introduces students to the skills and attributes required of, and the duties performed by, a Legal Administrative Assistant in British Columbia. Students are given an overview of the Canadian and British Columbia legal systems and of referencing the sources of law. Students develop skill in preparing general legal correspondence and documents, in using general legal terminology, and in handling financial and client records. Specialized terminology, procedures and documentation related to proprietorships, partnerships and non-reporting companies are covered.

OADM 1222 Spreadsheets and Business Calculations (3 credits)
This course will introduce students to a variety of business problems requiring mathematical solutions. The solutions to these problems will be accomplished by using a calculator and/or a spreadsheet program. These business problems will involve basic arithmetic, fractions, percents, discounts, simple interest, prorating and markup/markdown. The student will also create spreadsheets using financial functions and work with multiple worksheets and workbooks.
Prerequisites: Any Math 11 with a minimum grade of “C” OR MATU 0210 OR placement at MATU 0310 or math assessment.

OADM 1238 Accounting Procedures I (3 credits)
This course will introduce students to the concepts and practices of financial accounting for service and merchandising businesses. Students will complete the accounting cycle for a service business and complete the accounting cycle to trial balance for a merchandising business. Students will be introduced to special journals, subsidiary ledgers, sales taxes, and payroll activities. Student swill also be introduced to bank reconciliations and petty cash systems.

OADM 1239 Computer Bookkeeping I (3 credits)
This course will introduce students to the concepts and procedures involved in computerized accounting. Using Simply Accounting software, students will perform the setup procedures and complete routine and periodic processes related to the General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Inventory and Project Costing Modules.

OADM 1240 Business Communications and Procedures (3 credits)
This course is designed to enhance written and oral business communications as they pertain to the office in a global business environment. The effective relay and interpretation of verbal office messages are addressed. Composition of business messages for transmission by conventional and electronic methods is the major objective of the course.

OADM 1245 Employability Skills for Office Personnel (3 credits)
The focus of this course is on development of employability skills essential for today's office personnel. Models for analytical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, and conflict resolution will be presented and practiced within the context of current business issues such as multiculturalism, employment equity, harassment, ethics and productivity. The following office worker skills will be addressed: promoting the products and services of the organization, telephone and reception techniques, organization and time management, stress management, self-analysis, self-promotion and professional development.

OADM 1256 Microcomputer Applications I (3 credits)
This course is a "hands-on" microcomputer course. The students will develop a basic working knowledge of microcomputers with emphasis on the Windows interface, word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Students will apply the knowledge and use of these tools to solve problems encountered in an office environment. Students will be encouraged and expected to integrate their learning and incorporate the use of these tools in the production of professional documents that adhere to workplace standards.
Prerequisites: English 11 with a grade of "C" or better or equivalent and typing speed of 25 net words per minute or OADM 1103 or OADM 1106.

OADM 1265 Pharmaceutical and Billing Procedures (3 credits)
This course is designed to introduce the student to pharmaceutical and medical billing terms and procedures. Students will receive the knowledge necessary to communicate information between pharmacists and physicians regarding prescription medications. The major emphasis is on the classifications, spelling and pronunciation of the most commonly ordered prescription medications. The study of abbreviations, symbols and systems of measurement used in prescriptions will also be covered. Students will be introduced to all facets of medical billing. The student will become familiar with procedures and forms related to alternate billing including Workers' Compensation, ICBC, Department of Veterans' Affairs, RCMP, out-of-province billing and medical-legal billing. Emphasis is placed on understanding the Preamble and Fee Schedule from the Medical Services Plan of British Columbia and using this knowledge to complete day sheets and process claims manually and electronically.

OADM 1303 Keyboarding Skill Development (3 credits)
This is a keyboarding course for students wishing to increase their typing speed to a minimum of 40 net words per minute on straight-copy timings. A keyboarding software program will be used to evaluate and provide drills for correcting individual weaknesses. This program has proven very successful in building speed and accuracy to levels commonly sought by employers.
Prerequisites: Proof of 25 net words per minute on a five-minute timing or OADM 1103 or OADM 1106

OADM 1322 Medical Office Transcription (3 credits)
Students in this course will learn and apply the principles of medical transcription. Practice in transcribing a variety of medical reports from machine-recorded medical information with speed and accuracy will be emphasized, as well as proofreading skills and utilization of reference materials.

OADM 1325 Clinical Office Procedures (3 credits)
This course is designed to enable the Medical Office/Hospital Assistant to perform basic clinical procedures including the use and management of medical equipment. The student will perform basic laboratory tests and assist the physician with specific examinations and procedures. Emphasis is placed on the role of the medical assistant as a link between the doctor and external medical testing and treatment facilities.

OADM 1326 Legal Office Procedures-Litigation (3 credits)
This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of the Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of civil litigation in British Columbia. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience in topics such as Canadian law, Canadian court system, civil and criminal process, pleadings, default judgment, setting an action down for trial, discovery, trial, enforcement, settlement, and chambers applications. This is a "hands-on" course in which the students integrate keyboard, computer, document formatting, and transcription skills with a knowledge of civil law.

OADM 1327 Legal Office Procedures-Family Law (3 credits)
This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of a Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of family law in British Columbia. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience in topics such as statutes and rules, divorce and family courts, marriage in BC, pre-nuptial and separation agreements, undefended and defended divorce actions, chambers applications, annulment, change of name, adoption and applications to Provincial Court. This is a "hands-on" course in which the students integrate keyboard, computer, document formatting and transcription skills, with a knowledge of family law.

OADM 1328 Legal Office Procedures-Conveyancing (3 credits)
This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of a Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of conveyancing in British Columbia. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience in topics such as systems of land registration, land title searches, offers to purchase, methods to convey interests in land, registering and discharging mortgages and other interests in land, statements of adjustments, and the execution and registration of documents filed in Land Title Offices.

OADM 1329 Legal Office Procedures-Wills and Estates (3 credits)
This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of a Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of wills and estates in British Columbia. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience in topics such as Wills and Codicils, Grants of Letters Probate and Letters of Administration with and without a Will, Administration Bonds, transferring the deceased's assets, and winding up estates. This is a "hands-on" course in which the students integrate keyboard, computer, document formatting, and transcription skills, with knowledge of estate law.

OADM 1338 Accounting Procedures II (3 credits)
This course will introduce the student to the end of period activities required for a service business and a merchandising business with emphasis on the valuation of merchandise inventory and cost of goods sold. Using an accounting simulation, the student will complete the accounting cycle for a merchandising company. The student will also complete transactions and financial reports for various types of organizations using QuickBooks Accounting Software.

OADM 1339 Computer Bookkeeping II (3 credits)
This course will introduce students to the concepts and procedures involved in computerized accounting. Using ACCPAC for Windows software, students will perform the setup procedures and complete routine and periodic processes related to the General Ledger, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Modules.

OADM 1345 Administrative Procedures (3 credits)
This course addresses the role and responsibilities of the Administrative Assistant. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience in topics such as locating, selecting, organizing, presenting, and distributing information; creating and using policy manuals; managing records; organizing meetings and conferences; managing projects; making travel arrangements; managing office supplies and equipment; and supervising other employees. Office layout, ergonomics and health and safety issues will also be addressed. This is a "hands-on" course in which students will integrate computer, document formatting, and communication skills with knowledge of administrative processes.

OADM 1347 Payroll (3 credits)
This course will provide the student with the knowledge and skills required to produce payroll records that vary in degrees of complexity. Records will be created using both a manual system and popular computer application software. Students will produce payroll records for a simulated business applying bookkeeping, computer application, mathematical, critical/analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Topics include: taxable earnings/benefits, statutory and non-statutory deductions, records of employment, Employment Standards Act, provincial medical plans, payroll error correction, Worker's Compensation, terminations, company policies, union agreements, government reporting bodies (federal and provincial), month and year-end reporting and issues of confidentiality and ethics.

OADM 1356 Microcomputer Applications II (3 credits)
This course is a "hands-on" microcomputer course. The students will build on their working knowledge of microcomputers while developing new skills in using desktop information management, presentation software, databases, PDF editors and Web page editors. Students will apply the knowledge and use of these tools to solve problems encountered in an office environment. Students will be expected to integrate their learning and to incorporate the use of these tools in the production of professional documents that adhere to workplace standards.

OADM 1400 Job Search (2 credits)
This course is designed to prepare Office Administration students for a three-week office experience/practicum and for continued success in a business environment. Students will prepare a professional portfolio, research employment opportunities, prepare and apply for jobs, undertake a job interview and evaluate their own performance in the job application process. During this course, the student will find a practicum placement. It is recommended that students take this course in the semester immediately before taking OADM 1401 Office Practicum.

OADM 1401 Office Practicum (1 credit)
This course enables the student, during a three-week practicum, to apply and develop knowledge and skills in an office environment that are specific to the chosen Office Administration field. The student will maintain a journal and present an oral report to peers and faculty.

BCcampus On-line Courses
The Office Administration Department also offers some on-line courses through the BCcampus Applied Business Technology On-line Program. These courses are accessible on-line anywhere in BC and you can register for them through Douglas College. Most courses start every month. Some courses are taught by Douglas College instructors and other courses are taught by instructors at other colleges throughout the province. You will need a computer with Internet access. If you don't have a computer, check in your community at your local library, learning centre or college. OADM 1104 On-line Learner Success: 10 hours (0 credits)
On-line Learner Success is designed to give the learner the basic skills to be successful in an on-line learning environment. Students will learn the basics of e-mail, WebCT and the Internet. On-line Learner Success is free of charge and you are encouraged to enrol in this course to find out if e-learning is for you.

OADM 1106 Keyboarding: 30 hours (1.5 credits)
Keyboarding is designed to give the learner the ability to keyboard accurately and proficiently, proofread quickly and accurately, and key at the speed of 25 net words per minute. On a three-minute timing, the learner may need to practice for more than 30 hours in order to reach these goals.

OADM 1107 Business English: 90 hours (3 credits)
Business English focuses on correct English usage in a business environment and provides a comprehensive review of grammar, punctuation and style, as well as business spelling and vocabulary development. The course materials are presented in small, easily manageable learning segments.

OADM 1108 Word Processing I: 50 hours (2 credits)
Word Processing I is designed to teach the basic functions of a word processing program as well as teach the proper format of documents such as letters and memoranda. Although this course uses Microsoft Word 2000, many of the skills obtained are generic and can be transferred to most word processing packages.

OADM 1115 Introduction to Database (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. It introduces you to the Microsoft Access data management system. It will focus on planning, designing and creating a database to meet the information management needs of today's workplace. You will learn terminology, database concepts and features of relational databases. You will use various commands and features to create tables, queries, forms and reports. You will enter data, work with calculations, extract information, generate and print reports. Each unit begins with an introduction and a set of learning objectives. The assigned readings, hands-on computer activities and follow-up reinforcement exercises are your principal learning activities. Additional materials and resources are available on-line.

OADM 1116 Introduction to Computers and the Internet (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. The course is broken into two sections. The Internet section is designed to provide you with an introduction to the Internet including e-mail basics and advanced features, web browser basics, web navigation, web research and newsgroups. The Windows section is designed to provide you with an introduction to Microsoft Windows 98/2000 Professional and XP versions. You will learn to manipulate the Windows environment, use Windows Accessories and use My Computer and Windows Explorer to manage files and folders.

OADM 1117 Spreadsheets 1(2 credits)
This is a BCCampus online provincial course. This course provides you with a working knowledge of electronic spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. You will learn how to design, create, modify, and present professional-looking spreadsheets for use in today’s workplace. Exercises include using formulas and built-in functions to solve mathematical problems. You will also learn how to illustrate and present spreadsheet data in graphic form.

This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. Business Communication teaches you how to plan, organize and write correct and effective "reader-friendly" business documents appropriate for use in today's global business environment. You will learn how to write business letters, memos, reports, and electronic messages.

OADM 1228 Word Processing Level II: 50 hours (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. Word Processing II is a continuation of OADM 1108 Word Processing Level I. The course will cover additional instruction and practice with letter styles, tables, charts and reports as well as many advanced features of word processing software such as mail merge, macros, outlines, graphics and styles.

OADM 1242 Accounting I: 60 hours (3 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. It provides you with an introduction to manual accounting. Emphasis will be placed on fundamental accounting principles and their application in day-to-day business situations. This course is based on a service business organized as a sole proprietorship. Accounting I provides a solid foundation for learners wishing to further their accounting skills through computer accounting programs, payroll or advanced accounting courses.

OADM 1432 Litigation Procedures I (1.5 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. This on-line course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of the Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of civil litigation in British Columbia. Students will gain knowledge of the first part of handling a civil litigation file, from opening a new client file to Default Judgment. The continuation of the second part of handling a civil litigation file will be covered in OADM 1433 Litigation Procedures II. The student will have practical experience in topics such as commencing or defending a civil process, preparing and filing pleadings, and obtaining default judgment. This is a hands-on course in which the students integrate keyboard, computer, transcription and document formatting with knowledge of civil law.

OADM 1433 Litigation Procedures II (1.5 credits)
Litigation Procedures II is a continuation of OADM 1432 Litigation Procedures I. This on-line course will continue the student's introduction to the role and responsibilities of the Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of civil litigation in British Columbia. Students will continue to gain knowledge and develop practical experience in the further handling of a civil litigation file, from the discovery process to procedures at trial, as well as post-trial procedures, including bills of costs and enforcement. This is a hands-on course in which the students integrate keyboard, computer, transcription and document formatting with knowledge of civil law.

OADM 1434 Family Litigation Procedures (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. Family Litigation Procedures introduces the student to the functions and duties of a legal administrative assistant working in a family law practice in B.C. Subjects covered included legal terminology, the applicable provincial and federal statutes, the court system, and the theory and practical application of preparation of legal correspondence, undefended and defended divorces, and separation and marriage agreements.

OADM 1435 Conveyancing Procedures I (1.5 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. This on-line course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of a Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of conveyancing in British Columbia. Subjects covered will include knowledge and practical experience in topics such as systems of land registrtion, land title searches, contracts of purchase and sale, methods to convey interests in land, statements of adjustments and the execution and registration of electronic documents files in the Land Title Offices. This course focuses on the purchaser's procedures for a simple conveyance not involving financing.

OADM 1436 Conveyancing Procedures II (1.5 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. This on-line course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of a Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of conveyancing in British Columbia. This course is a continuation from the material covered in Conveyancing Procedures I. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience in topics such as methods to convey interests in land involving purchaser financing, strata property considerations, builder's liens, acting for the vendor, acting for mortgage lenders, additional adjustments for statements of adjustments, authorities to pay, the execution and registration of electronic documents filed in Land Title Office, acting for both the purchaser and mortgagee, and documents for the transfer of manufactured homes.

OADM 1437 Wills and Estates (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of a Legal Administrative Assistant employed in the field of wills and estates in British Columbia. Students will gain knowledge and practical experience in preparation of wills and codicils and the documents necessary to apply grants of Letters Probate and Letters of Administration (with and without a Will), Administration Bonds, transferring the deceased's assets, and winding up estates. Students will prepare documents acceptable to the Probate Registry for filing, followed by transmission and distribution of estates. This is a hands-on course in which the students integrate keyboard, computer, document formatting, and transcription skills, with knowledge of estate law.

OADM 1438 Corporate Procedures I (1.5 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. This course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of a Legal Administrative Assistant working in the field of corporate law. Through an extensive overview of the various forms of business organizations, this course will cover corporate structure including Sole Proprietorship, Partnership (General and Limited), and Corporations (Private: Non-Reporting, and Public: Reporting) and Corporate Registry. Students will acquire a basic knowledge of the Business Corporations Act, learn specialized terminology, and apply practical experience in document preparation, necessary for maintaining records of a British Columbia Corporation. The course will cover incorporation procedures, post corporate procedures and annual maintenance also.

OADM 1439 Corporate Procedures II (1.5 credits)
This is a BC Campus on-line provincial course. This course introduces you to the role and responsibilities of a legal administrative assistant working in the field of corporate law. This course covers corporate structure and completion of filing forms as it relates to the sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited partnerships, societies, cooperatives, non-reporting companies and extra-provincial non-reporting companies. The course also introduces you to securities and the BC On-Line (an internet access to government services and information about BC companies).

OADM 1450 Medical Administrative Procedures (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. This course is designed to introduce the student to the administrative duties and procedures required in a medical office/hospital setting. Topics covered include reception skills, appointment scheduling, telephone techniques, interpersonal skills, stress management, inventory control, mail processing, and filing and records management procedures. Medical law and ethics are an integral part of the course.

OADM 1456 Medical Transcription (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. Medical Transcription is an introductory course that familiarizes students with transcribing medical documents from oral dictation. Emphasis is placed on transcribing accurate content and applying correct formats, grammar and punctuation. The main objective is to provide students with knowledge of the content and formats of medical reports typically dictated in clinics and hospitals.

OADM 1457 Clinical Procedures and Practice (2 credits)
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. This course is designed to enable the Medical Office Assistant to perform basic clinical procedures including the use and management of medical equipment. The student will learn to perform basic laboratory tests and assist the physician with specific examinations and procedures. Emphasis is placed on the role of the medical assistant as a link between the doctor and external medical testing and treatment facilities.
