Post-Degree Diplomas

In order to receive a Post-Degree Diploma, students must complete a minimum of 30 redits of fifth and sixth-year courses. Admission to a Post-Degree Diploma typically requires students to have already obtained a Bachelor Degree.

Liberal Arts Diploma

The Liberal Arts diploma program is a two-year credential designed to provide students with a breadth of intellectual and academic experience while recognizing the importance of concentrated study in a specific field or discipline. The diploma addresses the needs of students pursuing educational or career goals in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences. The Liberal Arts diploma may serve as an educational goal or as an intermediate qualification for those completing further degrees at Douglas College or elsewhere.

General Requirements:

This program requires a total of 60 university-transferable credits, at least 15 of which must be completed at Douglas College, and at least 33 credits must be from Arts and Humanities subjects, chosen from the following list:

Anthropology, Communications (excluding CMNS 1105), Creative Writing, Criminology, Economics, English (excluding ENGL 1099), Geography, History, Humanities, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Music, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Political Science, Print Futures, Psychology, Sociology, Theatre and Stagecraft and Event Technology, Women's Studies and Gender Relations.

Specific Course/Area Requirements

1. Breadth requirement: 30 university-level credits from at least five subject areas. No more than 12 credits from any one subject area can be used to satisfy this requirement.

2. Writing requirement: One of ENGL 1130 or 1200, or CMNS 1110, 1111, or 1115

3. Reasoning requirement:  Either PHIL 1101 or 1201; or at least three credits from list A and three credits from list B:

List A:
CMNS 1118, 1218, 1221, 3100; ENGL 1101, 1102, 1106, 1107, 1109, 1112, 1114, 1115 or 1118; HIST 1180; HUMS 1101; MATH 1234; PEFA 1116; PHIL 1102, 1103; PRFU 2201; THEA 1230; WSGR 1100, 1101

4. Laboratory Science requirement:  One university-level laboratory science course of at least three credits.  (See an Academic Advisor for eligible courses.)

Note: Students planning to transfer to a program at another post-secondary institution should choose their optional courses according to the requirements of that program. Students planning to continue on to obtain any Bachelor of Arts degree must also complete the lower-division requirements for their major. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all program requirements are met. This should be done by regular consultation with an advisor.  

Co-operative Education Option
Students enrolled in this program may be eligible for a Co-operative Education designation.

Diploma in General Studies

The Diploma in General Studies at Douglas College is awarded in recognition of individualized achievement in education at the College. The General Studies Program complements both the career and university transfer programs. It enables students to design a framework for studies independent of the requirements for the university transfer program or for specific career-technical programs.

Students may select courses in the calendar in which they are particularly interested and for which the prerequisites have been met. Some of the courses selected may offer transfer credit to a university, institute or a professional school.

Students will qualify for a Diploma in General Studies upon completion of 60 credits and 20 courses using the following criteria:

  • must include one university-transfer English or Communications course
  • must include a minimum of two courses from each of three faculties including Student Development
  • no more than a maximum of 15 credits in any combination of development or college preparatory courses
  • a maximum of 15 credits in one subject as defined by the four letter course abbreviation such as BIOL or MODL and excluding development and college preparatory courses as mentioned above


Diploma in Science

The Diploma in Science is granted after the completion of a minimum of 60 university-transfer credits from the list of courses described below. Normally, first-year courses are those with a course number beginning with 1000, while second-year courses are those beginning with 2000. Students planning to transfer to a program of studies at another post-secondary institution should choose their courses according to the requirements of that program.

Academic Studies Certificate Program

The Certificate in Academic Studies recognizes the achievement of students who study on a part-time basis. Students may apply for this certificate upon completion of a minimum of 30 transferable credits provided that at least two courses have been completed from the English or Communications departments and that courses have been completed in at least three different departments. The certificate is of interest to seniors and those working full-time while pursuing their studies.
