1992 BC Games for the Physically Disabled Award

Created from part of the legacy of the 1992 BC Games for the Physically Disabled held in Maple Ridge that year, this fund provides awards to students with physical disabilities, or those training to enter a field involving work with the physically challenged. Recipients must be BC residents and Canadian citizens. Preference will be given to residents of Pitt Meadows or Maple Ridge.

Ayako Eileen Suarez Memorial Award

This fund was established by Ayako's husband, Andres, and her family. The fund provides an award to students in the Douglas College General Nursing program. Eligible students are also involved in College and/or community activities.

Badrudin (Bud) Charania Memorial Award

This award has been established in memory of Bud Charania, long-time employee of Impark, and friend to Douglas College. The recipients of this award must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater. Applicants from all areas of study will be considered.

Berkey Award in Anthropology

To be awarded to a Douglas College student in the Anthropology Program. Preference will be given to Anthropology students who have completed, or are enrolled in at least one course in Archaeology at Douglas College. The award winner will have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and will have a demonstrated financial need. (To be awarded in 2007/08.)

Betty Emery Award

This endowment was established by the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies of Douglas College to honour Betty upon her retirement, and to celebrate her working life and her dedication to her students, colleagues and to Douglas College. The recipient to be a student of the Department of Child, Family and Community Studies.

Beverley Miller Award

This award has been established to recognize the considerable contribution that Beverley Miller has made to the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies and to Douglas College as a whole. This award was named for Beverley Miller when she retired from Douglas College. While at Douglas College Beverley was the Dean of the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies as well as an instructor in the Health Sciences department. The award will assist students in the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies.

Bruce McMillan Performing Arts Award

Family and friends of Bruce McMillan have established this award in his memory. Candidates of the award are to be chosen from the Douglas College Performing Arts Program and will have maintained a high level of proficiency in performance and academic subjects.

Canadian Institute of Market Intelligence (CIMI) Award

This award was established by the former Canadian Institute of Market Intelligence (CIMI) to support Douglas College students entering year two of the Marketing Management Diploma Program.  CIMI was jointly established by the National Research Council and Douglas College to assist with the development and commercialization of new technologies through competitive market intelligence.  Recipients must plan to continue their studies at Douglas College in any stream of the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrate evidence of financial need.

Cassady & Company Award

Cassady & Company has partnered with Douglas College Foundation to create an award for students in either the Legal Studies Diploma program, or the Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate or Citation programs. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate evidence of financial need.

Carly Reid Memorial Award

This award was established in memory of Carly Reid, a former Douglas College student enrolled in the Print Futures program, by her family. Recipients must be either the Print Futures Diploma program or the Nursing program to qualify. Preference will be given to students with a disability who show compassion and caring to others and exemplify a spirit of joie de vivre.

Cathleen Smith ECE Award

This award was established to honour Cathleen Smith who was hired in 1974 as a member of the original teaching team in the Douglas College Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program. She pioneered and developed ECE courses for working with children needing extra support. She retired from Douglas College in 1994 and moved to Whitehorse where she continues to advocate for children and families and promote high quality early childhood programs. This award is for an ECE student with a preference for a student entering the inclusive practices option.

Charity Advisors Award

This fund was established by Eric Sommerfeld and Tracy Price, investment professionals who are passionate about working with the Non-Profit industry and believe that it is important to give back to and support the communities where they live and work. Candidates of this award must provide a minimum of 40 hours a year of verifiable time as a volunteer at one or more non-profit organizations.

Christine Young Award

This fund has been created by Jean Hammer, in memory of her daughter, Christine. Christine was born with a congenital heart disease. Despite difficulties with her health Christine lived a courageous and spirited life. This award provides aid to students in the Early Childhood Education Program at Douglas College who have a minimum GPA of at least 3.0 and have demonstrated financial need.

Class Act Award

This award was established from the proceeds of an annual event hosted by the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program and the Douglas College Foundation. Preference will be given to students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program.

College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC Award

The College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses provides an annual award to a student enrolled in the second-year of the Psychiatric Nursing Program.

Coquitlam Inn Convention Centre Award

This fund has been established by Ron Little, the owner and general manager of the Coquitlam Inn. Preference is given to students in the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration. Students in other business programs can also be considered. Evidence of involvement in College or community activities is required.

Crozét Science and Technology Award

Established by a past Executive Director of the Douglas College Foundation, Mark Crozét, this award recognizes female students enrolled in either the Faculty of Science and Technology or the Computing Science and Information Systems program at Douglas College.   Preference will be given to students displaying a career goal or interest in pursuing a degree in the Sciences.

Dave Burgess Award

This award is in memory of Dave Burgess, and was established by his Douglas College colleagues. Dave's life was tragically cut short during Summer 2004. Burgess was a Child and Youth Care Counsellor instructor as well as the Youth Justice Program Coordinator. The award will be given out to students in either the Child and Youth Care Program or the Youth Justice Program. This award is given to an "all-around student" - one with good academic standing as well as participation in the Community at large.

Deer Lake IODE Memorial Award

This fund, established by the Deer Lake International Order of the Daughters of the Empire, provides an award to a Canadian citizen enrolled in first-year of a Douglas College general health care program. Eligible students are also active in College or community activities.

Diana Gunderson Award

The family of Diana Gunderson and the Douglas College Psychiatric Nursing Faculty established this fund in Diana's memory to provide one or more financial awards for students in the Psychiatric Nursing Diploma Program. Diana was a dynamic and unique individual who taught for five years in the Psychiatric Nursing Program. Diana made a significant contribution to students and faculty through her humour, creativity, and passionate commitment to the psychiatric nursing profession. Upon recommendation of the faculty, funds will be awarded to recognize students who have demonstrated excellence, caring and creativity in the final year of their psychiatric nursing practice experiences.

Dorothy Jones Theatre Award

The Dorothy Jones Theatre Award was created to honour Dorothy on the occasion of her retirement by her colleagues from the Theatre Department. Dorothy was instrumental in the development of the Theatre Program at Douglas College and was employed with the College for almost 20 years. Selection of the student is made by the Theatre Department. Preference is given to a second-year student of the Theatre Program who has completed first-year theatre at Douglas College.

Douglas College Faculty Association Award

This fund, established by the Douglas College Faculty Association, provides an award to students enrolled in university transfer, academic or career programs. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of nine credits.

Douglas College Nursing Award

This fund, established in 1983, provides an award for a second-year nursing student.

Douglas College Rugby Award of Distinction

Douglas College Rugby awards shall be distributed to selected student-athletes in either the Fall or Winter semesters. Potential recipients must submit a letter to the executive of the United Rugby Club detailing their previous experience and future aspirations in the sport of rugby, by April 30th of each year. Successful applicants must be registered students at Douglas College or entering Douglas College in either the upcoming Fall or Winter semesters; demonstrate above average skill and dedication in the sport of rugby; and commit to full participation in the club rugby program. Consideration shall be given to those demonstrating financial need.

Eric (Bunny) Moffatt Memorial Award

Bunny spent the majority of his adult life working in the sales and marketing field for a wide variety of companies. For the last 25 years of his life he concentrated specifically on the sales and marketing of new homes for some of the largest construction/land development companies in western Canada and became a leader in the industry. This fund provides an award to students in the Marketing Program.

Essay Prize in Academic Writing: In Honour of Bill Main

Recipients of this cash prize are nominated by Academic Writing instructors in the English Department at Douglas College. Nominated essays must have been submitted in a first year Douglas College academic writing course during the previous Academic year (May through April). A student whose essay is nominated must have successfully completed the course in which the essay was submitted.

Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration Award

Established in 2001 by the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration from the Faculty Productivity Incentive Fund and international consulting projects.  In 2010, this Award was supplemented with funds from the Lothar Heinrich Agencies Scholarship.  Candidates for this award will be chosen from the Douglas College Faculty of Commerce and Business. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and there should be demonstrated evidence of need for monetary assistance.

Gail Moore Memorial Golf Award

The Gail Moore Memorial Golf Award was established in 1994 to assist young B.C. women golfers with their post secondary education. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and reside in B.C. for at least one year; be currently completing Grade 12 or attending a college or university; and have successful experience in competitive golf at the national, provincial or regional level prior to the time of application. Preference will be given to applicants with an index of 7 or under who have participated in extracurricular or community activities and are academically eligible to compete for their post secondary institution golf team and be enrolled in full-time study. Preference will also be given to students with a minimum of 2.5 (C+) grade point average. In the interest of supporting developing athletes, preference will be given to applicants under the age of 23.

Glenda Treffry-Goatley Early Childhood Education Award

This award was established by co-workers in recognition of Glenda Treffry-Goatley's 20 years of love, compassion, hugs and stories for the children and families of Friendly Forest Pre-School. The recipient of this award must show a commitment to providing a stimulating program in a beautiful environment, where children are nurtured as they learn through hands on discovery and play. Applications must be received by January 31st each year in the Early Childhood Education department.

Gordon Gilgan Award

This award has been established in honour of Gordon Gilgan, former faculty and long-time administrator at Douglas College. Gordon Gilgan was instrumental in establishing the Douglas College Centre for International Education, as well as Douglas College's Institute for Urban Ecology.  This award is for a student residing in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows School District.

HSBC Bank Canada Business Award

This special anniversary endowment fund has been set up by HSBC to support commerce and business administration students attending Douglas College. Preference is given to students involved in community activities.

IATSE Local 118 Stagecraft Award

The purpose of this fund is to provide an award to a student enrolled in the Stagecraft Program at Douglas College. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and an academic standing of 3.0 GPA or higher.

Jean Lownds Andrew Award

The Chi Epsilon Alumnae of the Alpha Iota Sorority created this fund in memory of Jean Lownds Andrew. It provides an award to a student from a Douglas College Business and Commerce Program.

Jessie Fenton Canadian Daughters' League Award

This fund was established by the Canadian Daughters' League and is available to a student in a Douglas College teaching program for the disabled. Evidence of involvement in College or community activities is also considered.

Jim Sator Award

To be awarded to a student in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Diploma program who has demonstrated academic achievement, and has a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipient must be in need of financial assistance.

John Krushelniski Memorial Award

The purpose of this annual fund is to provide an award to students enrolled in the Psychiatric Nursing Program at Douglas College in memory of John Krushelniski. This memorial award recognizes his work with Forensics, Corrections and Psychiatric Nursing and his quiet, compassionate and caring nature. He was a role model to his colleagues and a friend to many. The award will be given to a student who has demonstrated genuineness, caring, compassion, and empathy in their clinical practice. Good teamwork, support of fellow students, and the ability to work effectively as a team member in clinical practice will also be taken into consideration. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and have completed semester 4 of the Psychiatric Nursing Program. To be awarded based on a Psychiatric Nursing faculty recommendation.

Laughing Dog Adult Basic Education Award

This award was created by Roy Daykin (former Douglas College Director of Finance) and Linda Fulkerson. They feel they have been fortunate in obtaining post-secondary education over the years and wish to encourage others in pursuing their goals. This award is for students enrolled in a minimum of 9 credits, some of which are Adult Basic Education courses.

Leong Co-operative Education Award

This award is given to recognize excellence in Co-operative Education. Selection of the student is made by the Co-op Office. No application necessary.

Mary Johnson Memorial Award

This award was established by the staff and faculty of the Psychiatric Nursing Department of Douglas College in memory of Mary Johnson and is available to students enrolled in the Psychiatric Nursing program.

Matt Rumberg Memorial Award

The Matt Rumberg Memorial Award was established by Norma Rumberg in memory of her husband Matt Rumberg. Matt passed away in April 2007 after trying to save his beloved dog Holly; he is missed greatly by his family, friends and the community. The Matt Rumberg Memorial Award reflects Matt’s belief in the protection and support of animals in his community and the importance of higher education. This award will benefit students enrolled in their final semester of the Animal Health Technology program. Preference will be given to those who have contributed to their community in a manner that demonstrates their love and compassion for animals.

Maurice Hodgson Creative Writing Award

This award has been established in memory of the man who founded and developed most of the creative writing courses at Douglas College. Each year a cash prize will be awarded to a promising creative writing student who has completed a minimum of two creative writing courses at Douglas College and is enrolled in a third in the Winter term. One of these must be a second-year course (CRWR 2200, 201 or 350). Students apply to the Creative Writing Faculty.

Minerva Foundation Award generously sponsored by AWF

The Minerva Foundation was initiated in 1999 to provide funds for projects that will assist women to realize their potential and to create a safe place for them to live and work in British Columbia. The Minerva Foundation and the Association of Women in Finance have partnered with the Douglas College Foundation to create five awards for female students enrolled in the field of finance. Applicable programs include; Accounting, Commerce & Business, Economics, Legal Administration, Marketing, Mathematics, Self Employment and Women’s’ Studies & Gender Relations. The awards will be granted based on financial need and demonstration of at least one of the following criteria; Assisting single mothers in advancing their education, Re-training mature women returning to the workforce after a long absence, Assisting Aboriginal women or women with disabilities to overcome educational barriers.

Minerva Foundation for BC Women Award to Aboriginal Students

The Minerva Foundation was initiated in 1999 to provide funds for projects that will assist women to realize their potential and to create a safe place for them to live and work in British Columbia. Music Student Achievement Awards

The fund for these awards was established from proceeds from a scholarship benefit concert given by the Canadian guitarist, Norbert Kraft and from music faculty contributions. Three or more awards will be given to second-year students who have shown significant musical growth during their time in the university transfer music program at Douglas College. The successful recipients will have demonstrated outstanding musical and intellectual achievement, a willingness to develop and participate in all areas of the program, and a commitment to their studies through consistent effort and application. In order to be considered for these awards, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which they are eligible. No application is necessary; selection is made by the music faculty.

Pearl Belleson  Stagecraft Award

The Douglas College Stagecraft Department has established this award in memory of Pearl Belleson, a long-time friend and colleague who passed away in 1999.  Pearl was a renowned set and costume designer who worked on several shows at Douglas College during the 1980s and 1990s.  Pearl loved teaching and mentoring students - a passion she discovered while working as a designer at Douglas College.  The staff and faculty who admired and respected Pearl’s dedication and talent have established this award in her honour.  This award will be granted to a first or second year student enrolled in the Stagecraft Program with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Preference will be given to students who excel in their program.

Real Estate Foundation Award

This fund, established by the Real Estate Foundation, provides bursaries and scholarships to students enrolled in real estate related courses (including but not limited to: environmental economics, marketing management, legal secretary, environmental studies), and who demonstrate the intention to pursue a career in a real estate related field. Licensed real estate agents and family members who plan to pursue a real estate related career are also eligible.

Sally Allan Memorial Award

This award was created in memory of Sally Allan, a former Douglas College student, in loving memory by her daughters. The purpose of this annual fund is to provide an award to students in the English Program. Criteria for eligibility include a mature student status and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to students with a disability.

Sharon Moore and Matthew McCready Memorial Award

Ken Moore established this fund in memory of his daughter and grandson. The award is granted to any Douglas College student returning to complete or continue their education, or having experience with distance learning or correspondence education. Volunteer involvement in College or community activities is also considered.

Stewart Graham Memorial International Exchange Award

The Stewart Graham Memorial International Exchange Award was established by the Douglas College Foundation in memory of Stewart Graham, who was instrumental in the college’s founding. The purpose of this award is to assist students engaging in cultural or language learning studies programs abroad. The award is provided in support of travel or exchange costs. 

Terry Farrell Retirement Award

This award was created by the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty at Douglas College to honour the retirement of Terry Farrell a Political Science instructor. This award was created to support Douglas College students in financial need.

The Law Foundation of BC Legal Studies Award

This fund was established by The Law Foundation of BC. Since its creation, the Law Foundation has moved forward with the purpose of supporting programs that advance and promote the rule of law and a just society. To be eligible for this award students must be enrolled in the Legal Studies Diploma program at Douglas College.

University Women's Club of New Westminster Anna Mironoff Memorial Award

The University Women's Club of New Westminster, in memory of Anna Mironoff, has established this fund. This award is offered to a woman in the university transfer program who is a resident of Burnaby or New Westminster and who will be going on to complete a degree program at a university. There should be evidence of involvement in College or community activities.

Virginia Chisholm Memorial Award

The Virginia Chisholm Memorial Award was established to honour the memory of Virginia Chisholm, Douglas College Library Director from 1981-1999. Available to any student in any program who has a GPA of 3.0 and above and shows evidence of financial need.
