Arts Council of New Westminster Scholarship

The Arts Council of New Westminster established this fund in 1988 to provide one or more scholarships to students enrolled in the Performing Arts Programs at Douglas College.

BC Hydro Scholarship

This scholarship is available to a student in any environmentally related courses. The applicant should have good written skills and demonstrate a balanced lifestyle with evidence of community involvement. Preference should be given to Aboriginal or First Nations applicants and women students. The qualified student with the highest GPA in the most recent academic year would receive this award.

Barbara J. Bessey Office Administration Scholarship

This Scholarship was established by Shelagh Donnelly in honour of Barbara Bessey, who retired in 2009 following a 35-year career at Douglas College. Barbara Bessey excelled in office administration, and served as Executive Assistant to a series of College Presidents. Demonstrating intelligence, poise, initiative, flexibility, discretion and dedication, she had a tremendous, positive impact upon colleagues and students alike. Throughout her tenure, which was one of significant technological change, Barbara Bessey remained a life-long learner and exemplified the consummate caring office professional. This scholarship is intended to recognise and reward Office Administration Diploma graduates who demonstrate academic excellence as well as promise of the ability to bring qualities similar to those outlined above to their own future work environments. This scholarship is distributed in the Winter semester each year, students must be nominated by a fellow student, faculty member, staff or practicum supervisor within the Office Administration program additionally students must also complete the general scholarship application form found at Admissions and registration services page under "Financial Aid" in the "Other Online Services" column (http://www.douglas.bc.ca/application-services.html).

Bernie Agg Scholarship

This fund was started in 2003 by Pacific Legal Education Association (PLEA). It was established to honour the contribution to youth justice of Bernie Agg, a now retired Probation Officer and founder of the DARE Program and co-founder of the Vancouver's Step Up School. This scholarship is available to a student who is continuing their Post-Secondary degree studies after graduating from the Youth Justice Worker Diploma Program.

Bill Hill Family Scholarship

Bill Hill, a local New Westminster businessman, and his family created this fund to provide scholarships for second-year Douglas College students. Bill passed away in 1998. The recipients must display evidence of entrepreneurial activities and participate in community activities.

British Columbia Wrestling Scholarship

The British Columbia Wrestling Association is a non-profit organization that was created in 1979. Douglas College and the British Columbia Wrestling Association partnered to create this scholarship to support student wrestlers.

Brodie Osborne-Campbell Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honour the life of Brodie Osborne-Campbell, a 15-year-old Grade 10 student at Charles Best Secondary in Coquitlam, who died in April 2007 of a bacterial meningitis infection.  Brodie was the beloved son, and only child, of Colin Campbell, an instructor in the Douglas College Criminology Department, and Judith Osborne.  In order to be eligible applicants must be enrolled in the Douglas College Criminology Program and be a full-time student making the transition from first to second year.  Recipients will have a minimum GPA of 3.5.  In the event of a tie, preference will be given to applicants in financial need.  Applications are available through the Criminology Department.

Chestnut Music Scholarship - Theory/History

The Douglas College Music Department established this scholarship from the Laura Chestnut Memorial Endowment. A candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. The award goes to a student in either the second or third semester of the University Transfer Music Program who demonstrates excellence in theory and/or history and who maintains a satisfactory standing in the performance subjects. The award is to be applied toward further music studies at Douglas College. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.

Chris Johnson Scholarship Fund

Chris Johnson has been a dynamic member of the Douglas College Faculty since 1974. During those 29 years he has developed and implemented the Therapeutic Recreation Program, Coaching Diploma Program, Recreation Mid-Management Program and the Early Childhood Education Recreation Leadership Program. On his retirement in the summer of 2003, Douglas College honoured their colleague by naming the new fitness centre, The Chris Johnson Fitness Centre.

Chris will always be remembered for his dedication to people, work and laughter. His scholarship promotes this attitude. The recipient of this fund will be given to a student in the Sport Science Department or Athletic Department who consistently strives to “bring a little sanity into a totally insane world” and is given in recognition of the tremendous hard work done by Mike McCardell of Global TV who constantly attempts to live by the same motto.

Class Act Scholarship

This award was established from the proceeds of an annual event hosted by the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program and the Douglas College Foundation. Preference will be given to students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program.

College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of British Columbia – Richard Strong Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been created in honor of Richard (Dick) Strong, a founding member of the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC and the first President of the Psychiatric Nurses Association of Canada from 1952 to 1956. The award is made to the student with the highest cumulative GPA in the Psychiatric Nursing Diploma or Bachelors of Science in Psychiatric Nursing Degree program prior to their semester of preceptorship experience and program exit.

David Peterkin Memorial Music Scholarship

The Douglas College Music Department established this fund in memory of David Peterkin, a founding faculty member of the Department. A candidate must be enrolled in the Basic Musicianship Program in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. This award goes to a student who combines excellence in performance and academic music subjects. The scholarship must be applied toward further music studies at Douglas College. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.

Douglas College Biology Scholarship

The Douglas College Biology Department established this fund to promote academic excellence amongst biology students and recognize outstanding achievement in a difficult subject area. One award is given to the student with the highest grade in the final exam in Biology 110 and another to the person with the highest grade in the final exam in Biology 210. No application is required.

Douglas College Board Scholarship

The Douglas College Board Scholarship was established to provide an award to Douglas College students who are on the Dean's List and demonstrate excellence in their studies.

Douglas College International Education Scholarship

Scholarships are available to returning international students who have achieved a record of academic excellence at Douglas College. Students must have completed a minimum of 24 graded credits at Douglas College with a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be eligible. No application is required; selection is based on GPA and is made by the Centre for International Education.

Douglas College Nursing Scholarship

The Douglas College Nursing Scholarship was established to reward students enrolled in the General Nursing Program. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Douglas College Students' Union Scholarship

As one of the founding partners for the Douglas College Foundation, the Students Union originated the student aid endowment program with this fund.

Dr. G. Herald Keefer Music (Organ) Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Keefer, an organ builder and composer, and is given to a keyboard student, with preference to an organ student, in either the Basic Musicianship or University Transfer Music Program at Douglas College. A candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. The recipient must have a satisfactory standing in the music academic subjects and must use the award for further music studies at Douglas College. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.

Envision Financial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Envision Financial, title sponsor of Envision Financial Light the Lake, to reward Douglas College students enrolled in the Commerce and Business Administration Program. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Preference will be given to members, children of members, or grandchildren of members of Envision Financial.

George and Mary Porges Prize in History

George Porges taught European and Canadian history at Douglas College from 1970 to 1989. In 2002 he set up this fund to assist history students in their pursuit of history and lessons one can learn from studying history. In order to be eligible for this prize, students must have completed at least four history courses; a minimum of two at the 2000-level courses. At least one of these 2000-level courses must have an element or period of European history as its primary subject (HIST 2201, 2202, 2203, and 2204). Students must have completed one History course in the previous calendar year and students must have obtained an average grade of A- or better (GPA = 3.67) for all History courses completed at Douglas College. No application is necessary.

Henry Waack Music Scholarship

This award was established by Henry Waack, a founding faculty member of the Department who retired in 1993. Preference is given to very promising students with an excellent record in the performing and academic parts of the Program. A candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits in the Basic Musicianship or University Transfer Music Program, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. The award must be applied toward further music studies at Douglas College. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.

Hewlett-Packard Scholarship

This scholarship was created by Hewlett-Packard to reward Douglas College students enrolled in the Computer Information Systems Program. Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Jack Ferguson Memorial Scholarship

The Douglas College Criminology Department, friends and family created this fund in memory of Jack Ferguson, a long time faculty member who was instrumental in establishing the Criminology Program at the College. The recipient is preferably a criminology student.

John Oliver Ritchie Scholarship

This scholarship was created by family and friends in memory of John Oliver Ritchie. John was a much loved instructor at Douglas College for 30 years in the Faculty of Nursing. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize Douglas College nursing students who show promise and outstanding commitment early in their program and to assist those students as they claim their place in their chosen profession. Students are nominated by Nursing Faculty to receive this scholarship. Recipients will be selected based on clinical excellence, academic performance, and criteria related to John Oliver Ritchie as a nurse and teacher.

Ken McGlinchey English Scholarship

The family of Ken McGlinchey and the Douglas College English Department established this award in memory of Ken McGlinchey, a member of that department from 1971 to 1987. Ken is remembered for his excellence as an instructor and commitment to the field of Canadian Literature.  Eligible students must have completed at least two 1st year English Courses, be currently enrolled in a 2nd year English course and have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. Preference will be given to those who have completed, or are currently enrolled in, a Canadian Literature course. 

Kiwanis Club of New Westminster Scholarship

The Kiwanis Club of New Westminster established this fund to provide scholarships to full-time Nursing Program students at Douglas College. Preference is given to graduates of New Westminster Secondary.

Len Whiteley Memorial Music Scholarship

The Douglas College Music Department established this fund in memory of Len Whiteley, a founding faculty member of the Department. A candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. The award is given preferably to a brass player and, alternatively, to any member of the Concert Band who will be continuing with second-year music studies at Douglas College. The recipient must have a satisfactory standing in the music academic subjects. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.

M.H. (Bill) Morfey Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1988 by the family and friends of Bill Morfey to honour his retirement from Douglas College. A part of Douglas College for over 20 years, Bill started out as the college’s first staff employee in 1969.  He worked hard on behalf of the students and was a driving force behind the establishment of a permanent endowment fund for student financial assistance. Candidates for this scholarship must have completed at least 12 credits, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and be active in College and/or community activities.

Microserve Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Microserve to support Douglas College students. Up to two-thirds of the annual distributable income will be awarded as scholarships to students in any Douglas College program. The remainder of the income will be awarded as scholarships to students in the CSIS Program at Douglas College.

Mohammad Behzad Alereza Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in May 2005 by the family of Mohammad Behzad Alereza. Mohammad was a student at the David Lam Campus when he died tragically in a car accident. Recipients of the scholarship must be enrolled in the Political Science Program at Douglas College in a minimum of 9.0 credits, and have a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Momoyama Gakuin (St. Andrew's) University Scholarship

This fund was established by the Momoyama Gakuin (St. Andrew's) University and the Douglas College Centre for International Education. Two scholarships are available to a returning international student who has achieved a record of academic excellence in one of the following combinations of the first-year Modern Language courses: Chinese MODL 1191 and 1192, French MODL 1101 and 1102, German MODL 1131 and 1132, Japanese MODL 1171 and 1172, or Spanish MODL 1151 and 1152. Two scholarships are available to a returning Canadian or Permanent Resident student who has achieved a record of academic excellence in the combinations of the first- or second-year Japanese Language courses MODL 1171 and 1172 or MODL 2271 and 2272.

Moriguchi City/New Westminster 30th Anniversary Scholarship

The cities of Moriguchi and New Westminster and the Boards of Douglas College and New Westminster Secondary School inaugurated this endowment in 1993. Two scholarships are available for returning students who reside in New Westminster, have achieved a record of academic excellence at Douglas College and who display evidence of community involvement. Candidates must have completed a minimum of 24 credits at Douglas College with a minimum GPA of 3.5 prior to submitting an application for scholarship.

Motivation, Power and Achievement Society Scholarship

The Motivation, Power and Achievement Society (MPA) established this annual scholarship to recognize and reward students who show initiative and innovation in the field of Psycho Social Rehabilitation and recovery in mental health. The MPA Society has pledged to make this scholarship available to Douglas College students graduating from the Health Care Support Worker or Community Mental Health Worker Programs in Summer 2010 and Summer 2011. O'Sullivan Scholarship

The O’Sullivan Scholarship was established in 2008 by Shelagh Donnelly to recognize and benefit students who have an acquired brain injury and continue to excel in academics. This scholarship will provide encouragement and financial reward to such students at Douglas College. To be eligible students must have an acquired brain injury and be enrolled in any University-Transfer or Degree Program here at Douglas College. Eligible students need to complete the general scholarship application form found at Admissions and registration services page under "Financial Aid" in the "Other Online Services" column (http://www.douglas.bc.ca/application-services.html).

Philip Lowry Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Philip Lowry by his family. Philip was a graduate of the Douglas College Psychiatric Nursing Diploma program. The scholarship recognizes and rewards Psychiatric Nursing students attending Douglas College. Students must be enrolled in the final year of the Psychiatric Nursing Diploma or Degree Program and have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Recipients will be chosen by a Psychiatric Nursing Selection Committee in the Winter semester based on applications submitted. The application consists of a short (200 word max) description of how they demonstrate a passion for the psychiatric nursing profession, a commitment to working with people with mental health and addictions or related health challenges, and compassion for patients. The description must be submitted to the Selection Committee (forwarded to Ingrid Currey) by January 30th of each year.

The Notary Foundation and B.C. Notaries Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to one student each year who is enrolled in the Legal Studies Diploma program. The recipient must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and have demonstrated leadership and initiative in their program of study. (To be awarded in 2007/08.)

Rotary Club of New Westminster Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2002 by the Rotary Club of New Westminster to provide a scholarship to General Nursing students.

Shirafuji Academy Scholarship

Shirafuji Academy Scholarship has been established by the Shirafuji Academy in Nara, Japan. Four scholarships are available. Two scholarships are available to a returning Canadian or landed immigrant student who graduated from School District #42 (Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows School District). Two scholarships are available to a returning international student who has achieved a record of academic excellence at Douglas College. Students must have completed a minimum of 24 credits with a minimum 3.5 GPA at Douglas College prior to submitting an application.

Silverman Music Scholarship

Robert and Ellen Silverman established this scholarship to recognize the most outstanding performer in any of the Music Programs. A candidate must be enrolled in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. The successful recipient must have a satisfactory standing in the music academic subjects and must use the award for further music studies at Douglas College. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.

Skene Scholarship for Business Excellence

The purpose of this annual fund is to provide a scholarship to a second year student in the Business Program at Douglas College. Eligible students must have completed a minimum of 18 credits (minimum of 9 credits per semester) in the Business Program. Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a balanced lifestyle in such areas as work experience, entrepreneurial activities, college or community activities, sports, etc.

Sodexho Services Scholarship

Established in 2002 by Sodexho Services, this scholarship is available to any student from any program having a GPA of 3.5 or above.

Sylvia Perry English Studies Scholarship

The Douglas College English Department established this scholarship in honour of Sylvia Perry, a former English instructor at Douglas College.  To be eligible, students must have an average GPA of at least 3.5 in at least two university-transferable first-year English courses and one second-year English course, all completed at Douglas College.  The prize will be awarded to the applicant with the highest GPA in the required English courses.  No Financial Aid application is required.  However, to be considered, students must forward their name and student number to the English Department Chair.  Deadlines are December 31st where the second-year course was completed in the Summer or Fall semester, and April 30th where the second-year course was completed in the Winter semester.

Tatsuo Hoshina Voice Scholarship

The Douglas College Music Department established this scholarship in appreciation of the long service of Tatsuo Hoshina, a former faculty member who retired in 1998. A candidate must be enrolled in the University Transfer Music Program in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. The recipient will have demonstrated excellence in voice performance and will have maintained a satisfactory standing in other music courses. The award is given preferably to a voice concentrator or, alternatively, to any member of the Choir. The award must be used for further music studies at Douglas College. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.

Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

The purpose of this annual fund is to provide scholarships to students residing in the Tri-Cities area. Eligible candidates must be entering into their 2nd year in the Commerce & Business Administration Program, enrolled in a minimum of 9 credits, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Walter G. Robertson Memorial Music Scholarship

The Douglas College Music Department established this fund in memory of Walter G. Robertson, a founding faculty member of the Department. A candidate must be enrolled in the University Transfer Music Program in a minimum of 11 credits, including all the core music courses for which s/he is eligible. The award goes to a student who combines excellence in performance and academic music subjects. The award must be applied to second-year university transfer music studies at Douglas College. No application is required; selection is made by the music faculty.
