There is a steady demand for accountants with professional qualifications. The Douglas College program provides the education and training needed to enter this field. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible for a Diploma in Accounting Management. This program matches the content and standards of various courses offered by professional accounting bodies including Certified General Accountants Association of BC, the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC.
Successful completion of the diploma program can lead to exemptions up to a complete third year leading to the CGA, CA and CMA designations.
Students who are interested only in bookkeeping should consult the Office Administration section of this calendar.

Career/Further Educational Opportunities
A graduate of the two-year Accounting Management Diploma program is equipped for a junior management position in the accounting department of a small to medium-sized firm.
Such a position may lead to managing the following areas of the firm:
- Financial accounting
- General accounting
- Financial management
- Cost accounting
- Accounting information systems
After graduation and while employed, a graduate may enrol in further studies with the Certified General Accountants Association, the Certified Management Accountants Society or the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Transfer to Professional Accounting Associations
Students planning to transfer to one of the professional accounting bodies such as the Certified General Accountants Association of BC, the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC, or the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC, are advised to contact the receiving body to confirm current program equivalencies prior to registration in Douglas College courses.
University Transfer
Two-year block transfers have been arranged with the Open University (Bachelor of Administrative Studies), the University of Lethbridge (Post-Diploma Bachelor of Management), and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, (Bachelor of Business Administration). Certain conditions apply and students are encouraged to contact the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration for details. (Please consult the BC Transfer Guide.)
Transfer credit has also been arranged with Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria, the University of Northern British Columbia and the University of the Fraser Valley.
Location
First- and second-semester courses are offered at both the New Westminster and David Lam campuses. Third- and fourth-semester courses are generally offered only at New Westminster Campus.
Intake Dates/Application Deadlines
**Application deadlines may be extended.
Since this is an open enrolment program, students may begin classes in September, January and May. The recommended deadline to apply for all open enrolment programs is three months prior to the intake commencement. However, applications will continue to be accepted up to one month prior to the intake. Official deadlines to apply for all intakes are one month prior to the intake commencement. To improve your opportunities at registration, it is strongly advised that you apply as early as possible, but not more than one year in advance of the intake. Students who apply after the recommended deadline may find they cannot register in their desired course(s) because either the course is full or the student does not have the necessary prerequisites for the course.
Admission Requirements
- Douglas College general admission requirements apply to this program.
- Students with work experience may also be considered.
- Given that both Principles of Mathematics 11 or Foundations of Math 11 with a minimum grade of "C" and Academic English 12 with a minimum grade of "C" are prerequisites to many courses offered in the Accounting Management program, applicants should complete both prior to beginning the program.
Program Duration
The Accounting Management Program is a two-year program. In order to complete the program in four consecutive semesters (excluding the summer), it is necessary to begin in September. Many full-time students, however, choose to take longer to complete the program. This program may also be taken on a part-time basis.
Other Information
Co-operative Education Option Students enrolled in this program may be eligible for a Co-operative Education designation.
