Commerce and Business Administration - University Transfer Diploma

The Diploma in Commerce and Business Administration is a two-year program which offers the student an opportunity to become acquainted with a variety of subjects in both the business and academic areas, including a Math course and a number of electives from Arts and Humanities. On completion of 60 credits, students will be eligible for the Diploma in Commerce and Business Administration.

Although the program is designed to facilitate the transition of Douglas College students to a number of universities and university colleges, special attention is given to satisfying most of the Lower Division and Group requirements of Simon Fraser University's Bachelor of Business Administration degree program.

Career/Further Educational Opportunities

Although institutions agree on accepting courses from each other, many things can affect the transfer of individual courses. Because of differing policies, the receiving institution may evaluate courses and adjust grade point requirements. It is the student's responsibility to consult the current calendar and transfer guide of the receiving institution for the following details:

  • relevant course equivalencies
  • degree requirements
  • course requirements
  • Grade Point Averages
  • entrance requirements

Students are encouraged to review the recommendations for selected receiving institutions that appear below the Program Content and, also, to consult an Academic Advisor.

Refer to the British Columbia Transfer Guide www.bctransferguide.ca for individual course transfer.

* The prerequisite for ACCT 1210 is ACCT 1110. However, since ACCT 1110 has no transferability on its own, students taking ACCT 1210 will have to take 63 credits, not 60 credits. Please note that ACCT 1235 is an intensive three-credit course with a prerequisite of English 12 and Math 12, both with a grade of "B" or better.

As program requirements vary between receiving institutions, students should consider the recommendations below when selecting their elective courses.

For transfer to SFU

Students, who have completed the Commerce UT Diploma or a minimum of 30 credits including the 11 lower division required core courses can apply for admission to the third year of the BBA program at SFU. Students will be selected competitively based on the University grade point admission average.

Electives:

Student choosing ACCT 2320 and ECON 2350 as electives in semester III and IV will have satisfied all 11 lower level core courses. If you choose electives other than these courses, they must be non-BUS and non-BUEC university transferable courses.

WQB (Writing Quantitative Breadth) Requirements:

Students admitted to SFU must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they undertake. The minimum grade in all WQB courses is C-. Some of the WQB Requirements can be completed at college. 6 credits of W (writing), 6 credits of Q (quantitative), 24 credits of B (breadth) (6 credits of Social Science – B-Soc, 6 credits of Humanities – B-Hum, 6 credits of Sciences – B-Sci, and 6 credits outside student’s major; these do not have to be designated B courses and can be any non-BUS or non-BUEC courses.

For transfer to UBC

Students can transfer credits from the Douglas College Commerce UT Diploma on a course-by-course basis to satisfy most of the lower level requirements of the UBC Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Electives:

Students should choose ACCT 1110 and ACCT 1210 in order to satisfy the COMM 293 Financial Accounting requirement, and should choose MARK 1120 to satisfy the COMM 296 Introduction to Marketing requirement.

For transfer to Douglas College BBA

Students, who have completed the Commerce UT diploma, can apply to complete their BBA degree at Douglas College. The new BBA has specialties in either (1) Financial Services and Administration and (2) Applied Accounting.

For transfer to University of Victoria

The Faculty of Business will accept a maximum of three courses that transfer as Commerce courses to the University of Victoria.

Douglas College students who complete the diploma with certain restrictions will receive 30 units of credit at UVic and satisfy all of their pre-Commerce course requirements upon acceptance into UVic's Bachelor of Commerce degree program. This enables them to move directly into the third year of the UVic BComm degree program. To meet the entry requirements, students must observe some restrictions when choosing their courses:

  1. Electives that transfer as non-Commerce courses at UVic must be chosen
  2. In semester III, ACCT 2320 cannot be chosen

Consult an academic advisor at Douglas College for clarification of the requirements for this degree program and to ensure that appropriate courses are chosen as electives.

For transfer to Kwantlen University College

Students completing the 60-credit Douglas College Diploma, if accepted at Kwantlen, will receive 60 transfer credits towards their degree. Students should consult with an Academic Advisor to ensure that they choose elective courses that help satisfy Kwantlen's "bridging" requirements.

For transfer to Royal Roads, University of Athabasca, and University of Lethbridge

Students completing the 60-credit Douglas College Diploma, if accepted at Royal Roads, University of Athabasca or University of Lethbridge, will receive 60 transfer credits toward their degree. Electives, therefore, may be chosen that satisfy personal interests or employability. For the latter purpose, Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration courses are recommended.

NOTE: Some students transfer to other institutions before they complete the full two-year program at Douglas College. In fact, they can still apply for a Douglas College diploma by completing the missing courses at another institution; e.g., a student does not complete BUSN 2429 at Douglas College and proceeds to SFU where the student completes BUEC 232. Douglas College would accept SFU's BUEC 232 toward the completion of the Douglas College UT Commerce diploma program.

Students should be aware that the Douglas College UT Commerce program has changed over time to better match evolving university requirements. For purposes of completing the Douglas College UT Commerce program, students can complete either the program requirements as of their first semester at Douglas College, or the current requirements as long as the program is completed within five years.
