Creative Writing Department

Creative Writing offers courses in which students have the opportunity to write fiction, drama, poetry, personal narrative, children's literature, screenplays, and, to a lesser extent, analyses and reviews. Students should note that the focus of the courses is on the development of style and the treatment of content, not on the development of basic composition skills. Classes are conducted as workshops in which students learn that critical thinking is an essential part of the creative process. Creative Writing instructors produce Pearls, an anthology of outstanding student work each year, and faculty select one or more recipients of the Maurice Hodgson Memorial Award for achievement in Creative Writing.
