Financial Services Management Diploma
Welcome to the Financial Services Management Program
The Financial Services industry has developed into one of the most rapidly-growing fields of business in Canada. As a financial manager, you'll deal with a wide range of financial products and personal financial planning options - and have the skills to financially manage a firm or your own business.
Demand for skilled employees is so great that we've revised our Financial Services Management Program, adding new courses developed with the Canadian financial industry. If you're business-minded or thinking about a career in finance, completing the Financial Services Management Diploma Program will prepare you for a sector that continues to grow. (Students in other Commerce and Business Administration Programs may also enroll in Financial Services Management courses designated FINC).
The demand for investment managers
The possibilities are endless when it comes to financial management. Banks and investment companies offer
increasing options to the consumer and this explosion of financial products requires trained specialists
to sell and manage them. Further increasing the demand for wealth managers is the advent of the
"baby boomer" generation seeking retirement planning and investment management to secure a sound financial position in retirement.
Essential skills and knowledge
In the Financial Services Management Program, you'll study courses developed in consultation with the
Canadian Securities Institute and major Canadian investment firms. These include: Commercial and Financial
Mathematics (FINC 1231), Fundamentals of Personal Finance (FINC 2300), Fundamentals of Financial Management (FINC 2340) and Canadian Securities course (FINC 3350).
The full program covers all the essential knowledge and skills needed to start your career - from personal selling to business law to management essentials. You'll also study important courses in areas such as Marketing, Accounting and Communications. Get information on all courses at the Douglas College Calendar. Please note that Financial Services Management courses, e.g. FINC 1231, FINC 2340, FINC 2300, FINC 3350, are open to all students in the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.
Learn with experienced faculty
Your instructors are experienced professionals, with backgrounds in financial services, retail, marketing
and other fields in Commerce and Business Administration. They have worked in the business world - and
focus on learning activities that teach real-world skills.
Career prospects and future studies
WorkFutures, the BC government comprehensive study on occupational outlooks, ranked the growth rate for
financial management careers to be "much faster" than average. Incomes were also rated "much higher
than average," with about 35 percent of financial planners being self-employed. As well, many courses
within this program can be transferred towards credits in university degree programs and other business
credentials. Check the BC Transfer Guide or consult with faculty for updated information on specific
courses.
