Hotel and Restaurant Management

The Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management is a two-year program designed to give people new to the industry a broad background in the marketing and management issues associated with lodging and restaurant operations. For the individual already working and experienced in the field, it offers an opportunity to expand one's knowledge of marketing and management theory and practice to position oneself for university transfer or management training programs.

Douglas College, in conjunction with the BC Provincial Government, private sector organizations and other institutions, has developed a common provincial core of courses. The program has received industry validation and receives block transfer credit to 3rd and 4th year degree programs at

Employment Opportunities

Tourism, including restaurant and hotel/motel operation, forms one of the largest industry sectors in British Columbia. Notwithstanding present economic conditions, forecasts show that there will be substantial growth for workers and managers in this field for the next decade.

Intake Dates/Application Deadlines

**Note: Application deadlines may be extended.

Classes begin in September. Students may take CMNS 1111 or 1115 and ENGL 1101 or 1102 or 1106 or 1109 or 1130 prior to beginning the first semester or anytime during the program. There are no plans to offer industry-specific courses during the Summer Semester. The deadline to apply is April 1.

EARLY ADMISSION
Although application and document deadlines may be identified for this program, we encourage all applicants to apply early and to submit all supporting documentation as early as possible. Those applicants who apply early and submit all documents early may be offered early admission.

Other Information

  • This program offers a free information session.
  • Advanced Standing: Those wishing to enter the program who have significant work experience in the industry may be granted advanced standing for specific courses.
  • Work Experience: During the course of the two years in the program, students will be required to demonstrate that they have acquired a minimum of 500 hours of work experience in the industry.
  • Some credit may be given for industry-specific work experience prior to enrolment.
  • A number of these courses transfer into the Business Management Diploma Program.

Admission Requirements

  1. General Admission Requirements
  2. English 12 with a minimum grade of "C" or approved substitution
  3. Principles of Math 11 or equivalent (Intro to Math 11 and Math 11A are not acceptable) or an approved exemption as follows:
    • DVST 0410 or successful completion of the Business Readiness Assessment are acceptable alternatives/equivalents for the Math 11 requirement.

Preferential Admission - Note: Preferential Admission will not apply for the Fall 2010 intake.  Admission will be based on First Qualified/First Admitted.
Admission to the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program is contingent upon availability of seats, completion of all admission criteria and applicant ranking as determined by a process of selective admission evaluation. Applicants who have provided up to 500 hours of hotel and/or restaurant industry experience and/or English 12 with a "B" or better and/or BC Principles of Math 11 with a "B" or better will be given preferential admission.

School District 41 Burnaby Mountain's Hospitality Management Program and Burnaby Central's  Chef’s Program entitled to preferential admission upon successful completion of the programs.

School District 43 Tourism 11 and 12 programs entitled to preferential admission upon successful completion of the Tourism 11 and 12 curriculum.

Note: Applicants are advised to meet all admission criteria as early as possible to demonstrate preparedness and motivation for obtaining a seat in the program.

**Note: English (Semester I) and Communications (Semester II) courses require English 12 with a "B". Students who are admitted to the program with less than a "B" will be required to write the Douglas College Writing Assessment with a minimum designation of "Writing Skills Review" or an approved equivalent. Students are encouraged to complete the assessment test as soon as possible but no later than the beginning of July for Semester I. Refer to the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts Assessment Equivalents. Also note that English and Communications courses are offered in all three semesters (Fall, Winter, Summer).

Credentials

Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management

Students may transfer 18 HORM credits, 8 HORM courses, to the General Business Diploma. These Courses are HORM 1115 (formerly HORM 1110), HORM 2240, HORM 2330, HORM 2445 (formerly 2440), HORM 1325 (formerly HORM 1320) combined with HORM 2415 (formerly HORM 2410) and HORM 1210 combined with HORM 2310.

Program Content

First year

First-year students register in HORM 1115 and HORM 1420 along with 3 other courses for a total of 15 credits from the list of first-year courses below for their Fall semester. Students register into HORM 1220 and the 4 remaining (15 credits) for their Winter semester.
