Hospitality Management
The Diploma in Hospitality Management is a two-year program designed to give people new to the industry a broad background in the marketing and management issues associated with lodging and restaurant operations. For the individual already working and experienced in the field, it offers an opportunity to expand one's knowledge of marketing and management theory and practice to position oneself for university transfer or management training programs.

Employment Opportunities
Tourism, including restaurant and hotel/motel operation, forms one of the largest industry sectors in British Columbia. Notwithstanding present economic conditions, forecasts show that there will be substantial growth for workers and managers in this field for the next decade.

Intake Dates/Application Deadlines
September (Fall) Intake: Full-time ( 4-5 courses per semester) May 1; Part-time ( 1- 3 courses per semester) July 1
January (Winter) Intake: Full-time ( 4-5 courses per semester) October 1; Part-time ( 1- 3 courses per semester) November 1
Students who enroll as full-time status who drop below 4 courses in any one semester will be re stated as part-time students.
Please note: Late applications will be accepted, but there is no guarantee of admission or seat availability for applications submitted, processed and accepted after the deadlines noted above.
Students may take CMNS 1111 or 1115 and CSIS 1110 and ENGL 1101 or 1102 or 1106 or 1109 or 1130 and Econ 1101 or 1150 or 1250 and Math 1160 or FINC 1231 prior to beginning the first semester or anytime during the program. There are no plans to offer industry-specific courses during the Summer Semester.
Other Information
- This program offers a free information session.
- Work Experience: During the course of the two years in the program, students will be required to demonstrate that they have acquired a minimum of 500 hours of work experience in the hotel and/or restaurant industry.
- Some credit may be given for industry-specific work experience prior to enrolment under the College's Prior Learning Assessment policy.
- A number of these courses transfer into the Business Management Diploma Program.
Admission Requirements
The College admits students on a first-qualified, first-admitted basis whereby students must satisfy all admissions criteria to establish eligibility and are then offered places by date of eligibility, except in programs that use selective admissions processes that rank order qualified applicants.
- General Admission Requirements
- English 12 with a minimum grade of "C" or approved substitution
- Foundations of Math 11 or Principles of Math 11 or equivalent or an approved
exemption as follows:
- DVST 0410 or successful completion of the Business Readiness Assessment are acceptable alternatives/equivalents for the Math 11 requirement.
School District 41 Burnaby Mountain's Hospitality Management Program graduates may apply to receive course credit for HOSP 1115 using a Request for Transfer Credit form. Burnaby Central's Chef’s Program graduates are entitled to course credit for HOSP 1145.
School District 43 ACIT Level 1 Cook Technical Training graduates may apply to receive course credit for HOSP 1145 using a Request for Transfer Credit form .
Note: Applicants are advised to meet all admission criteria as early as possible to demonstrate preparedness and motivation for obtaining a seat in the program.
**Note: English and Communications courses require English 12 with a "B". Students who are admitted to the program with less than a "B" will be required to write the Douglas College computer-based English assessment with a minimum designation of College Level Score or an approved equivalent. Students are encouraged to complete the assessment test as soon as possible. Refer to the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts Assessment Equivalents. Also note that English and Communications courses are offered in all three semesters (Fall, Winter, Summer).

Credentials
Diploma in Hospitality Management
Students may transfer 18 HOSP credits, 8 HOSP courses, to the General Business Diploma. These Courses are HOSP 1115, HOSP 2240, HOSP 2330, HOSP 2445, HOSP 1325 combined with HOSP 2415 and HOSP 1210 combined with HOSP 2310.
Transfer Credit
Douglas College Students transferring into the HOSP program may be granted unduplicated credit as follows:
HOSP 1210 for ACCT 1110
CSIS 1110, CMNS 1111 or 1115, ENGL 1101, 1102, 1106, 1109 or 1130, ECON 1101, 1150 or 1250 and FINC 1231 or MATH 1160
Program Content
First year
Full-time first-year students register in HOSP 1115 along with a combination of 4 other courses from Table A and Table C for a total of 15 credits for their Fall semester. Students register into HOSP 1220 and the 4 remaining courses (15 credits) from Table A and C for their Winter semester.
Part-time students follow the same pattern but may register into 3 or fewer courses.
