Opportunities Enabled Information Technology

The Opportunities Enabled one-year Certificate Program is designed to help people with physical disabilities find a new career to last a lifetime. The program combines systems, networking and database concepts and programming languages necessary for a business environment. The complete classroom immersion for nine months, (five days a week, eight hours a day) offers a variety of program delivery methods including: traditional lecture, interactive hands on labs, computerized tutorials and student run tutorials.

The program will prepare students to:

  • determine user needs
  • purchase, install and customize packaged software
  • write computer applications for use in the organization
  • design and implement database and web solutions for businesses
  • network at the Local and Global level
  • work in organizations of all sizes
  • grow into a management position

Career/Further Educational Opportunities

The demand is growing again for computer systems expertise in all types of organizations. Job titles change rapidly, but may typically include: computer support specialist, computer programmer, network user support specialist, technical support staff, help desk specialist, network operator.

Opportunities Enabled Information Technology courses will transfer internally to the Computer Information System Program. Transfer credit to various external institutions are being sought. Refer to the British Columbia Transfer Guide (www.bctransferguide.ca) for the current individual course transfer.

Location

Available at the David Lam Campus in Coquitlam only, Room A2070, dedicated lab for this program.

Intake Dates/Application Deadlines

**Application deadlines may be extended.
The program commences in September for full-time students. Because the seats are limited to 20 each year, it is advisable to apply early.

Other Information

An essential part of the Opportunities Enabled Program is the support and guidance of the Business Advisory Council (BAC). BAC membership consists of IT executives from both public and private sector corporations and rehabilitation experts. BAC involvement in the program touches on student interview selection, continuous curriculum review, oral student evaluations and internship placements - as well as many other activities.

Admission Requirements

  1. Successfully write the pre-admission aptitude test. This is a test of math, reasoning and the ability to visualize objects in space.
  2. Successful candidates from the aptitude test will then be interviewed by the BAC, (designed to identify physical ability, commitment, family support, possible barriers, etc.). BAC comments and recommendations regarding each interviewed candidate are given to the Opportunities Enabled Coordinator to make final recommendations into the program.

Program Duration

This is a one-year program. Completion of the program is in three 12-week in class semesters, (five days a week, eight hours a day) and one four month professional work experience term.
