Course Descriptions

Douglas College offers a four-year baccalaureate degree program. The Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching (BPEC) prepares you for teacher education programs in elementary, middle and secondary school, as well as, to be a community coach or other sport leader. You will develop strong teaching and coaching methodologies. Those students interested in becoming secondary teachers will complete a dual major in Sport Science and Biology that meets the entrance requirements to 5th year teacher education programs in British Columbia. Those students interested in elementary teaching take the same Sport Science courses, but have a broad range of electives to chose from. Throughout your studies in the BPEC degree, you'll be encouraged to develop skills and knowledge you can use now. The degree contains fieldwork placements, exercise technology labs, leadership courses, student-centered delivery, and a certification profile that is in demand by future employers. You'll be prepared to apply to a 5th year teacher education program, coach, and/or work in recreation settings.

The Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching primarily prepares people to teach and coach, however these other career and educational opportunities exist for people with training in Physical Education and Coaching:

Teaching overseas with international
agencies such as CUSO and WUSC
Recreation leader and/or administrator
Athletic trainer
Athletic coach within community club or school setting
Aquatic director
Physical education instructor in the armed forces and police
Recreation director at holiday resorts and private clubs
Therapeutic recreation and adapted physical education
Sports official
Sports camp instructor and director

Location

Courses in Sport Science are offered at the New Westminster and David Lam Campuses.

Intake Dates/Application Deadlines

The Fall application deadline is February 28.

Students who are currently registered at Douglas College and wish to apply for the Diploma in Sport Science or Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching program must re-apply for admission by the date indicated above.

It is important to note that Sport Science courses are not restricted to students in the limited enrolment program. Once the program students have registered, there may still be a considerable number of Sport Science seats available to all students during the regular registration period.

Although application and document deadlines may be identified for this program, we encourage all applicants to apply early and to submit all supporting documentation as early as possible. Those applicants who apply early and submit all documents early may be offered early admission.
