  • Liang sets CCAA record with Royals’ supreme court

CCL Press Release March 9, 2011 New Westminster, BC

She’s graduating soon from the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program, but Melody Liang has not been very welcoming on the court.

The women’s doubles veteran of the Royals set a new standard with her fifth gold medal at the recent CCAA badminton nationals in New Brunswick.

“Melody has a very powerful style of play that at times tends to intimidate other teams and opponents,” says Douglas coach Al Mawani. “She does so many things well that it's difficult to focus on an area of weakness for opponents to exploit.”

    And the record itself?

“It’s amazing! To be able to play at this level for a period of five years is astounding and a credit to Melody's commitment of maintaining such high standards year after year.”

Liang’s own focus at the latest nationals wasn’t the record but winning for the Royals and four-year partner Stephanie Ko.

“I didn’t really think about myself while winning my fifth title, but was thinking about how I could win another gold medal for Douglas and not let my partner down,” says Liang.

“In the doubles game, it's very important to have good communication with partners. Stephanie and I have been playing together nationally and internationally for four years. We’re partners on court and good friends off court. We are able to be objective and supportive when we met difficulties in the game or in training.”

A native of China, Liang is also working hard to complete her Canadian citizenship – and then work and coach in her adopted country. Her coach and mentor clearly hopes she’s successful.

“Melody is already coaching in our Junior Academy program and I anticipate she will continue to be involved with us one way or another,” says Mawani. “As a coach, it’s been a pleasure to have her on the team for the past years.”

The 2010 National Badminton Championships were held in Edmonton, Alberta this past weekend at the home of Alberta provincial badminton champions NAIT Ooks. BC champions Douglas College Royals were in no mood to give up their #1 national ranking or their national title they have won the previous four years. The team continued their domination by going 5-0 in the team round robin to wrap up their 5th straight national title!!

The individual event followed the team competition with Royals athletes in 4 of 5 finals. First up were defending Women's Doubles champions Stephanie Ko & Melody Liang. The duo had been dominant throughout the round robin competition and continued form through the final. They defeated the Ontario duo 21-9 and 21-7 in impressive fashion to win their third straight national title (4th for Melody Liang).

The men's doubles final followed and the Royals leader Alvin Lau was competing for a record 5th national title along with former Alberta athlete Darren Hong. All looked to be going to plan when Alvin & Darren won the first game. But slowly the Capilano duo fought back and managed to win the 2nd and 3rd games to take their first national title. Alvin Lau completes his collegiate career with an amazing 4 national titles, one runner up medal and numerous individual awards.

This was to Alvin’s second participation in this prestigious tournament that includes national teams from Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and Guatemala.

After discussions with Badminton Canada, Alvin decided to travel to Peru and participate in the preliminary and quarter final matches and then depart Peru on Friday the 19th to arrive in Vancouver on the 20th at 12 noon.

He then took the 3pm ferry to Nanaimo and joined his team for dinner on Saturday night. He then collected his 5th BCCAA championships, in a hard fought 3 set match with Capilano University, as Douglas College won gold in 4 of the 5 events on Sunday.

“It was a long day of travelling but I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. Everything that Douglas College, my team-mates and my coach (Al Mawani) have contributed to my development; I wanted to be here with them.” mentioned Lau after the victory.

Next up for Alvin is Edmonton and the CCAA championships where he hopes to lead Douglas College and BC to the team championships as well win a 5th CCAA gold medal. He will then continue to work, coach and show the next generation of players his passion for the game.
