Standards

Like most post-secondary institutions, Douglas College has developed standards and rules for the use of computers. These rules have come about in order to minimize the costs of effectively supporting large numbers of computers within our networked environment. Equipment will be purchased only from the approved technology lists and through the standard purchasing processes.

The situation is the same with software. The software becomes the property and/or the responsibility of the College as the licences are in the name of the College. For word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and related functionality, the College supports the Microsoft Office suite. Employees can buy their own copies of this software from the Bookstore for a small fee.

It should be noted that these standard hardware and software selections are intended to be discussed by the Education Technology Forum on a regular basis, in order that new products and functional needs can be considered for "standard" status.

For classroom instruction, CEIT will install software at the instructor's request. The installation of this software occurs at specific times each year. Employees are sent a GroupWise email notifying them of these installation deadlines.  As part of the process, instructors are responsible for filling out and submitting the following forms:

Additional departmental and individual software needs, not part of the College standard suite, are considered in relation to the cost of implementation and associated support issues. These requirements should be documented and presented to the appropriate CEIT administrator:
