Employment
Quality education is essential in the health care sector.
Douglas College has been providing educational programs for over 30 years. Because of our long-standing work in the health care sector, we have a proven track record of relationships with employers.
On-site clinical experience and workplace practicums are an essential part of all our programs. We make sure you'll be ready for the challenges you'll face on the job.
The advantage of studying in a Faculty of Health Science Program is that you will be prepared for a specific career in Health Sciences.
The health care sector has seen many changes in recent years but there is strong demand for many professions within the sector. Canada's Job Futures Web site includes nurses and hospital assistants (a category which includes Resident Care Aides) on its list of most promising occupations for tomorrow's job market. According to BC Work Futures, Canada will continue to experience a nursing shortage until at least 2008.
Nurses, dental assistants and resident care attendants are part of large occupational groups - which means there are greater employment opportunities due to staff turnover and retirements. The mass retirement of the Baby Boomers will create more vacancies for health care professionals and increase demand for services they provide.
Douglas College offers some unique career programs in the health care sector. We're the only public College in BC that offers Dispensing Optician, Health Information Management and Psychiatric Nursing programs.
If you're interested in exploring a health care career, volunteer work is another excellent way to explore options, develop self-confidence and make valuable connections.
