Douglas College

AV Copyright & Licensing

The use of videos, DVDs and other visual media is governed by various copyright and licensing restrictions. Here is a brief summary of some of the provisions that govern the use of media:

Home Use Only

Materials licensed as Home Use Only may not be used in a classroom or anywhere on campus. Individuals must take these programs home for private viewing. This licensing restriction applies to the showing of portions (ie. short clips) as well as to the entire program. Materials licensed for Home Use Only are clearly noted as such in the library catalogue record. Note that Feature films are licensed for Home Use Only, but Douglas College purchases an annual license which allows some limited use (see below).

Public Performance Rights

Materials licensed for Public Performance may be used on campus and in classrooms, provided that no fee is charged for the viewing. For many productions, the purchase of Public Performance Rights add substantially to the price. Wherever possible, the library attempts to buy titles that are licensed for Public Performance.

Search for videos/DVDs in the library catalogue. Check the Local Note field for the designation HOME USE ONLY. If this is not stated, then the film has been purchased with Public Performance Rights. Note that Feature films are not licensed for public performance, but Douglas College purchases an annual license which allows some limited use (see below).

Feature Film Public Performance License - Educational Use

Douglas College Library has purchased a limited Public Performance site license for feature films. Note that this license applies to use by Douglas College employees and students for educational purposes only (i.e. in classrooms and in the Library) and does not apply to external use of feature films. The site license covers feature films distributed by a range of studios, which are represented by Audio-Cine Films Inc. and Criterion Pictures Ltd. The studios include 20th Century Fox, Alliance, Disney, Paramount, MGM, Miramax, United Artists, Tristar, Warner Brothers, and many others.

The library catalogue identifies feature films that are covered by this license with the following note: Limited Public Performance license applies.

For details on the studios covered under the license, as well as other information about Public Performance Rights and feature film titles, go to:

Feature Film Public Performance License - Entertainment Use Rights

Douglas College Library has purchased an additional Entertainment Use license with Audio Cine, which allows wider use rights outside ordinary classroom viewing. This license covers only those feature films distributed by Audio-Cine Films Inc. Some restrictions apply:
  • The event must be free to attend
  • The primary audience of the event must be members of the institution
  • Event advertising must be limited to students and employees of Douglas College and may not appear in general community newspapers
  • For a list of titles covered under this license see Audio Cine.
