Photocopies of Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Douglas College has an agreement with Access Copyright that outlines the terms and conditions (.pdf) of using copyrighted works without having to obtain permission. Please print and fill out a request form (.pdf) and bring it together with the item to the library.


If the photocopy does not meet the criteria listed below, instructors must obtain written permission from publisher or copyright holder before material can be placed on reserve:

You can copy:

  • Up to 10% of a published work.

  • An entire newspaper article, short story, play, poem, essay or article from book or periodical issue.

  • An entire entry from an encyclopedia, dictionary, annotated bibliography or similar work.

  • An entire chapter if it is less than 20% of a book.

  • To replace damaged or missing pages.

  • Journal articles for class distribution (one copy per student, two for instructor).

  • Articles or part of a book for library reserve.

You cannot copy without written permission:

  • If the publisher or author is on the exclusions list (.pdf) of the Access Copyright Agreement.

  • If the photocopy was obtained through interlibrary loan.
