June 10, 2009 - North Delta grad receives Governor General’s Bronze Medal for top grades

North Delta’s Lindsay Martin went into the Dispensing Optician Program at Douglas College with the goal of gaining the right balance of people, academic and technical skills. She did that and then some. Martin graduated on June 4 as the recipient of the Governor General’s Bronze Medal.

The prestigious award is granted to the Douglas College student with the highest standing in a two-year diploma program. Martin achieved an overall grade point average of 4.23 (between A and A+) out of a possible 4.33.

“It was really surprising to win this award. I had no idea,” says Martin. It wasn’t the first award for Martin - she recently received a $500 Coopervision Canada Bursary.

Martin advises new students in the program to make school their first priority. However, she wasn’t all work and no play. Asked what her favourite part of college was, she doesn’t hesitate. “The relationships I had with my classmates and instructors. In this program, you’re not just coming to school - you’re making lasting friendships with people who will become your colleagues.”

“As Lindsay's professional career takes her away from Douglas College, I will miss her presence in the classroom as a student, a colleague, and as a friend,” says Tony Viani, coordinator of the Dispensing Optician Program.

“Lindsay was truly one of the best students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. Lindsay has a motivation to succeed that is unsurpassed. The entire faculty enjoyed having her as a student,” Viani adds.

Martin is now working at Boardwalk Optometry in White Rock. In the Fall, she will begin working on her Bachelor of Health Sciences through distance education with Thompson Rivers University.
