October 26, 2009 - Blood Relations: Play about Lizzie Borden asks the ultimate question
A dark sense of humour is a must when one is involved with a play about Lizzie Borden.
Asked why people should come see Blood Relations, director David Quast quips, “Because if they don’t, I might take something sharp to them.”
“Seriously though, it’s a great script performed by a group of very talented and passionate students. It’s about Lizzie Borden and if you don’t know who she is, do yourself a favour and Google her. It has darkness, humour, tension, hope, despair, love and of course, mystery and murder. What more could a theatre-goer want?” Quast asks.
The latest production by the Theatre and Stagecraft departments at Douglas College, Blood Relations is based on the trial of the infamous Borden, accused of murdering of her father and stepmother with an axe in 1892.
The play, written by Douglas Theatre graduate Sharon Pollock 30 years ago, was originally titled My Name is Lisbeth. Quast too is a Douglas Theatre alum. Since leaving in 2008, he has been busy creating a theatre company called 591 Productions. He was recently named best actor at Theatre BC’s ACToberfest held in Creston, BC.
“The fact that we are putting on this play at the place of its birth definitely colours it. Not so much a sense of coming home, but definitely stopping by for a holiday visit,” says Quast.
For now, the director is remaining mum on whether or not he believes Borden committed the murders, the ultimate question raised by Blood Relations.
“That’s my own little secret and maybe I’ll share with someone if they ask me after seeing the show. It promotes dialogue that way, which is always a good thing.”
