September 25, 2009 - Douglas College enrollment rises

The final numbers are in this week as Fall registration ends at Douglas College.

The college rolled out the welcome mat for 9,500 students taking credit courses, an overall increase of 7.3% from last year at this time.

“The word is getting out about the many advantages of coming to Douglas,” said new President Dr. Scott McAlpine.

Most classes at the New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses are full, with a significant increase in university-level courses, especially in the liberal arts (such as psychology and English), where enrolment is up 12%, and commerce/business courses which increased by 10.5%.

“Students really appreciate the close interaction they have with our amazing instructors. Rather than start with the impersonal experience in big lecture halls, our students get deeply involved in their learning from the very start. So the growing popularity of Douglas is not a surprise.”

Other significant increases in enrollment occurred in criminology, nursing, office administration, classroom and community support, print futures: professional writing and developmental studies (which prepares students to take college-level classes).
