Oct 23 - Douglas College partners with Movember for men’s soccer nationals
Soccer fans can expect to see some shaggy-lipped players take to the pitch when Douglas College hosts the men's college soccer nationals next month, in a tournament that has partnered with Movember Canada. The 2012 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer National Championship runs Nov. 7-10 at Cunnings Field, Town Centre Park, Coquitlam.
Competing teams are being asked to register with the Movember challenge, which has men grow moustaches in the month of November to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer.
"We really wanted to build in a community involvement aspect to the championship," says Kyle Baillie, Director of the Centre for Campus Life and Athletics at Douglas. "We haven't seen a partnership like this before in the CCAA, so we thought it was fun, relevant and something the players could get behind."
The team that raises the most funds will be honoured at the CCAA Banquet, as will players with the best moustaches.
The tournament's community focus also includes free admission, a free youth soccer clinic, and a BC FoodBank drive - fans are asked to donate a non-perishable food item at the event.
Competing in the tournament are eight teams from five conferences - Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) in British Columbia, Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) in Ontario, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) in Québec, and Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
