Jan 16 - Award-winning humanitarian to speak at Douglas

Samantha Nutt - medical doctor, activist, author and award-winning humanitarian - will speak at Douglas College's New Westminster Campus next Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Nutt is executive director of the North American chapter of War Child, a charitable organization that aims to improve the lives of people in war-torn countries through access to education, justice and employment.

For the past 15 years, Nutt has been on the front lines of many of the world's biggest crises, including Darfur, Afghanistan, Iraq and others.

On Jan. 25, she will offer her unique take on the issue of global conflict, and what we as global citizens can do to solve it.

Nutt will speak as part of International Day, an annual event at Douglas College that celebrates and promotes cultural diversity, awareness and understanding. She will be signing copies of her book, Damned Nations: Green, Guns, Armies & Aid, afterwards.

John Fox, of the College's Uganda Project, an initiative that sends students and interns to the African country to work in hospitals, libraries and social service centres, says Nutt's talk will be an important addition to the event, now in its second year.

"There are a number of people who speak about international issues with passion, but Samantha combines passion with action," Fox says. "Looking at the breadth of her involvement and commitment, it's a great fit for underscoring the importance of global citizenship and international awareness for the Douglas College community."

Fox says he hopes Nutt's talk will help audience members become more aware of the idea of global citizenship and what it means to them.

"It's about making it personal. Samantha Nutt has made it personal for herself. For the Douglas College community, I think if people are able to somehow position the issues from a personal perspective, then their understanding is greater."

See Samantha Nutt Wednesday, Jan. 25, 7pm, at the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre, New West Campus, 700 Royal Ave. Free and open to the public. Reserve your seat at 604 527 5484.
