February 11, 2010 - Douglas valedictorian balances business with baby

East Vancouver’s Bill Ashbee has become adept at multitasking.

“Juggling full-time school with two jobs and a newborn has prepared me for any amount of stress I can find in my new career,” says Ashbee, who graduated from the Financial Services Management Program at Douglas College last Friday. He was valedictorian for his graduating class.

The juggling act certainly didn’t hurt his studies. Ashbee performed so well in his Business Strategy course that he was selected to become part of a Douglas College team participating in the Best Strategy Invitational, an international online business strategy game. The team won its division, competing against several U.S. universities and colleges.

“Bill has done Douglas College a great service both in the classroom and online,” says Business instructor Laura Byrne.

The pièce de résistance? Ashbee’s daughter, Madeliene, was born on October 16, 2009, in the middle of midterms during his final semester.

Though he admits it was tempting at times to “just give up and let all the stress go,” he says he’s glad he stuck it out now that he’s on track to a career he loves.

“Walking away to a job wasn't what I wanted, I wanted a career, and I wanted to work in Financial Services where I could deal with numbers and people. Also, with my baby girl being born in October, it put a lot of perspective on my future.

I didn't want to be working two jobs and living paycheque to paycheque anymore. I wanted stability and a working life that allowed me to spend time with my daughter.”
