Nicole Bennett discovers humanity

When Nicole Bennett decided to go back to college, she wanted to help others. But she discovered that she had to help herself first.
Bennett's two years in the Psychiatric Nursing Program at Douglas College turned out to be a voyage of self-discovery.
"I got into Psychiatric Nursing because I had a desire to speak for the underdog - I wanted to be an advocate," said the 34-year-old East Vancouver resident. "It was a real trip of self-discovery. It was like a meditation retreat that went on for two years."
The program involved a lot of hard work, but Bennett threw herself into it with passion and enthusiasm. She made the Dean's list for academic achievement four times and finished with a GPA of over 3.8. She won both the Pearson Canada Book Award and the Richard Strong Memorial Award.
"I probably went overboard, but wanted to be the best nurse that I could be," said Bennett.
Her hard work and dedication made Bennett the logical choice last June to give a speech at an event where Health Minister Colin Hanson introduced the 2004/05 nursing strategies to the nursing community.
Somehow, Bennett also found time to volunteer at the Dr. Peter Centre in Vancouver and with the BC Schizophrenia Society. She also played a big role in her class's fund-raising efforts for the John Crawford Memorial Fund.
On June 2 of this year, Bennett addressed the crowd at graduation ceremonies at Douglas College. The decision was recognition of her dedication and hard work says Jacqollyne Keath, Advanced Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing Program Coordinator.
"Nikki Bennett was an exemplar student in community mental health," said Keath. "She's very passionate about nursing and an excellent choice for valedictorian."
Bennett finished her program in December, 2004 and is already launched on her career in nursing, working at both St. Paul's and UBC Hospitals. Her two years at Douglas College left her feeling totally transformed.
"I feel like a completely different person," says Bennett. "I like myself more - I feel like a better person. I feel I discovered the humanity in everyone."
