Feb 1 - Douglas begins offering prenatal classes in Mission
Expectant parents in Mission will no longer have to travel out of town for prenatal classes, as Douglas College expands its Perinatal Program into the city.
"They haven't been doing births at Mission Memorial for some time now," says Kathie Lindstrom, manager of the Perinatal Program at Douglas. "Parents have had to go to other places for hospital births and prenatal education, so this is a way to bring that part of the community back."
The first prenatal class takes place Thursday, February 10, at the University of the Fraser Valley, 33700 Prentis Ave., Mission.
Lindstrom says eight couples have already signed up for classes - though the program hasn't been advertised yet.
"People heard about it from health care providers in Mission and asked that their names be put on a list."
The Perinatal Program at Douglas College is recognized as a leader in perinatal education. The Douglas curriculum is used throughout BC and Canada.
"All instructors are certified by Lamaze International and incorporate their dedication, belief and trust in normal birth and healthy birth practices," Lindstrom says.
Douglas College prenatal classes are currently offered six days a week in 14 locations around the Lower Mainland as well as Whistler and Squamish.
"Having access to prenatal care is really important. We've been trying for quite some time to get out into the Valley. It's a great opportunity for Mission and for us."
Lindstrom has been teaching and working at Douglas College since 1990 and has been teaching childbirth classes and offering breastfeeding support for almost 30 years.
"We are very proud of the programs that we have developed and the amazing instructors that teach for Douglas College."
