Basic Occupational Education Program

The Basic Occupational Education (BOE) Program is designed for students who have a barrier to learning and/or employment. Currently the BOE Program trains students for employment in three industry sectors: Food Services, Electronic and General Assembly, and Retail and Business Services.

The BOE Program is self-paced, and enrolls new students throughout the year whenever space is available. Students take approximately 10 months to complete the program. Each BOE option has three components: lab training, classroom instruction, and practicum placement in industry settings. In the lab students are provided with individualized, "hands on" training to acquire relevant industry skills. In the classroom, students address issues related to employment.

Practicum placements are generally four weeks in length. Students must complete at least two successful practica (work experience) in order to graduate. Program staff provide on-site training and support to students and employers during this time.

On campus training typically takes place Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. For some students, half-time attendance can be arranged. The student's shift while on practicum will depend on the employer's schedule.

Classroom Curriculum

As the BOE program teaches specific, industry-based skills through hands-on training in simulated and employer-based work environments, it is essential that students are well equipped with basic employability skills, such as good work habits, interpersonal skills, and sufficient communication skills prior to enrolling in the BOE program. It is therefore recommended that students who are experiencing difficulties in these areas consider enrolling in other prevocational programs prior to applying to the BOE Program.

Topics Related to Each Specific Training Option

  • safety and sanitation in the food service industry including "Food Safe" (weekly workshops with participants earning a Food Safe certificate)
  • theory related to electronic assembly
  • workplace hazardous materials information system WHMIS (one day workshop with participants earning a certificate)
  • TOP STAR customer service (one day workshop with participants earning a certificate)

Application

Students who are interested in the BOE Program should complete a Douglas College Application for Admission. A small application fee is charged and should be included when returning the form. Once the application has been processed, the applicant will be contacted to set up an individual interview to determine suitability.

Many students are able to have their fees paid through a variety of mechanisms. Information about funding sources will be given to the applicant at the time of the interview.

The Program works closely with the Employment Specialist on campus and with many community agencies which are available to provide employment prospects for graduates.
