Retail and Business Services Option
Students are trained to obtain retail, wholesale, and office related positions in the retail and business sector. Students will learn routine duties including data entry, filing, photocopying, mail sorting and basic retail functions such as shipping and receiving, pricing and stocking merchandise, and customer service.
Retail and Business Services Lab Curriculum
Basic Retail & Business Related Duties:
- record keeping (may include filling out various forms and shipping documents)
- matching products with corresponding bar codes (UPCs)
- following inventory lists to price or label merchandise
- entry level shipping and receiving
- warehousing (may include unpacking, organizing and preparing merchandise for the sales floor)
- tagging and ticketing merchandise (may include attaching security tags onto specific items)
- stocking merchandise on the sales floor
- facing merchandise on shelves
- using "Retail Plus" computer program to familiarize self with basic retail functions such as scanning and pricing merchandise, inventory, invoices, and sales transactions
- Customer Service including one day TOP STAR customer service workshop with participants earning a certificate
- computer - basic data entry (may include entry level word processing)
- operating multifunction photocopier, including collating, stapling, and hole-punching documents
- operating fax machine
- numeric keyboarding, using adding machine
- alphabetical filing of files or documents within established system
- numeric filing of files or documents within established 7 digit system
- sorting and filing documents by chronological order and/or by document type
- sorting and slotting mail
- using phone and postal code directory
- routine telephone skills
